It's not petty. It's pointless.
In a normal ice-the-kicker situation at the end of the game I totally agree. After that last timeout is called, the kicker knows 'this is it.' By saving the last timeout he doesn't know until the ball is snapped if this is it or not.I understand using the first two timeouts to "icing" because the kicker doesn't know if he's going to have to kick or not. But using the third one makes no sense to me because after that the kicker knows that he's kicking.

But the whole idea of icing the kicker is to give him time to let the pressure get to him. It's for when a kicker absolutely has to make the kick or his team loses the game. He's a hero if he makes it, he's a goat if he misses. If he misses the kick at the end of the first half? Big fucking deal. I mean, you want to make it but you're not going to lose any sleep over it if you miss. The pressure isn't there to make icing the kicker have any effect in that situation. It's a waste of time.
