If we play a team with a D like Sparty and a good offense, the challenges are will escalate significantly.

agreed but then again, this year how many of those teams are out there?

You are going to need a defense that can keep OSU in the low 30's and an offense that can do better than that against the OSU D.

I'm not sue that the usual auto answer to that "Bama, Clemson" is true this year.

I think that Clemson is not one of those unless they somehow come together. That COULD happen or they could be like 2015 tOSU that just never was a “team”.
I think Bammer has all that and UGA/LSU could be problematic. Frankly, PSU/Wiscy COULD pose problems if they keep improving. I know it hurts to say this, but I think that ND team is pretty solid as well. So you are absolutely correct that there aren’t many truly capable speed bumps, but we are talking about winning a Natty, which means that you will be playing the best of the best and so there will be a couple that (in my IMO) we will need to be better than we are today or we will likely lose. No reason we can’t get better...

And honestly, when the season started, I was a doubtful of any real shot at a NC, so the fact that this is a real serious shot at it is pretty remarkable to me.

as far as Fields is concerned, I wonder (and only the coaches could tell you) how similar he is in comparison to where Haskins was after 6 games last year.

I keep coming away from every game with the feeling that Fields is much further along than he probably should be.

Agree 100% that he is further along than he should be. That’s why I keep saying it is an unfair ask that he KEEP growing/improving, but somehow he needs to keep progressing because you don’t get a defense like this one every year.

Oh I don't think it's unfair to expect him to keep progressing at all.

The rate might slow, meaning I don't expect him to be twice as good as he is now in another 6 games kind of thing but I fully expect him to be a complete QB as the big games at the end of the year come along.

Justin has been great but IMO until anyone can slow down our running game we will not see Day put Justin in that kind of position to throw a ton.

If Justin keeps 70% 220 yards and 3tds a game that's a crazy ass stat line. More goes into it than yards.

Yes he can hold the ball a little but that's a guy trying to make a play with his arm and not his feet. If he wanted to he could take off on every single one of those situations and get 10.

Secretly, Bama’s D is pretty bad (by their standards) this year.

They’re like 30th against the pass and like 47th against the run. They’re 38th in total D. They allow over a full yard per play more than OSU. Over 100 more yards per game. They also allow 6 more points per game.

Clemson’s D is statistically one of the best again. But their offense looks like OSU’s in 2015.

Clemson also hasn't played 1 decent team because once Alabama beats them (A&M) this weekend they'll have 3 losses.

Another thing to consider is Day has shut the offense down once games have gotten out of hand. Miami of Ohio we didn't play first string offense for a half. Our offensive stats would look alot better if we ran it up like PSU and others have.

Two players other than Fields that can take this offense to another level if they keep improving is Wilson and Teague. Both players are dripping with talent. Wilson and Teague will be all conference Freshmen Team. Maybe National for Teague.

Every rep Wilson gets the better. I can see this kid being lethal by seasons end. I think the Rutgers and Maryland games he needs to get a ton of reps. I'd feed Teague and rest Dobbins after he gets 100.

This offense is not at it's ceiling which is scary.

I can see Wisconsin doing it, but with the zone will be a huge factor in keeping Taylor in check. Not sold on PSU's offense.

Nationally, I'd say Georgia is the sleeper threat. Talented, great running game, experienced QB. Bama at #2 and it's all about Tua and the WRs. Can't play zone against them. Not sleeping on Clemson. Too much talent and it's only halfway through the season. Fuck them.

Someone mentioned ND, and they would be annoying. Very good defense, and Book doesn't have a great arm, but would have success against a zone. They just don't have the WRs to do it for 4Qs.

He won't be named a starter, but I expect Wilson to be one of the 3 best WRs on the team by the end of the season. He's playing sooner, more often, and his blocking just keeps getting better. It speaks volumes that the coaches put him out there right away against the best team to date.

And yeah, the offense still has a ways to go, IMO. Running game is getting to the 2013 level, and the passing game is really good, but can be so much better. MSU was an example of that. I think Fields had 180 passing at half, and ended up with 210 or whatever. That's a sign of MSU being a great defense, but also room for a lot of growth.

Wisky checks a lot of the boxes but it's always the same deal with them, can the QB do enough when OSU puts a serious damper on the running game? It seems like since Tressel left and our style quit fitting Wisky like a glove, the superior athletes of OSU win out.

With this years team mixing in a lot more zone and being a lot more fundamentally gap sound I think their offense will be even more limited than the past couple of years when the TE's and jet sweeps don't have the same effect.

Good point about UGA.

I think people underrate OU as a threat to actually score a lot of points against OSU’s D. It’s not inconceivable to me that OSU could score 42 on them and still lose. There are some soft spots in the zones and teams with a mobile QB to buy time and pass catchers who can turn routine plays into big ones could be problematic.
