2019 tOSU Defense (Official Thread)

#72 Defense was worse than Akron and Rutgers last year. That"defense" gave up 46 touchdowns!
Grinch mailed it in last year. His big ego was so hurt he couldn't work with Schiano. That makes him not look so good as someone you're pinning your hopes on.
But that was last year. The Silver Bullets are back! I fully expect a top twenty defense or better this year. That will make this team a much tougher team than last year even if the offense needs time to gear up.

Well, that last statement is certainly an indictment of the staff for basically stealing money, lots of money. Your main job is to teach the players what they’re doing which, in a team sport, includes knowing what the rest of the team on the field is or is supposed to be doing. I’m glad we’ve moved forward and it seems that we have the right people in place. Also, I really like that it sounds like Wade knows what the hell he’s talking about. I think he’s going to have a great year.

I just watched the Hafley interview. The dude has some confidence to him for sure, a subtle dose of swag.

The more I think about the overall talent on this D the more excited I get. And I think Hafley does too. I mean, start to look at each position and look at the potential ceiling of each player. It’s unreal. If everything can gel and the coaches get the scheme working......look out. I’m gonna go on record now saying this D has the potential to be as good as any during the Meyer era if not better. I truly believe that.

Crazy thing is, there was just as much talent last year, and the coaches out schemed themselves. I agree, if everything can gel, and they can get a simplified scheme to work with these athletes, then watch out! Let the boys make plays, and don't get too cute or over complicated. Every fan shouldn't be able to read the plays by mid season

They're "getting sacks left and right."

Against Ohio State's offensive line.

I'm having trouble getting too pumped about this report.
Nah. You are missing the point. The D was terrible last year. Lots of studs are back that individually have not come close to reaching their potential let alone the power of 11 guys clicking as one. We have a new staff that’s taking a different approach which, at this point, could be the key. Way too early to tell.

With Day, Yurcich, Wilson, Hartline, etc I have full confidence. We have nowhere near a complete OLine. Give that some time. It will look TOTALLY different come end of fall. It’s ok that they have to “catch up” at this point. With the weapons back on offense and our leadership on that side of the ball along with the potential of Fields I have very little concern.

I can almost guarantee that Day will have the offense churning out championship level offense (which a top 10-20 offense can get you) so just be pumped that the D which has been holding us back is showing some signs that they may be able to hold up their side of the bargain.

If you have a championship level defense, your margin for what defines a "championship level" offense becomes a whole lot larger.
