I think you're conflating "finite" with "fixed". If Day goes to Smith and says, "Find me another $500k so we can keep Hartline", Smith will find it.

That said, if GM is our biggest question, that’s a pretty good place to be considering what he’s put on the field over the years. When he went to TSUn he was my greatest concern of all their staff.

Oh by all means.....nuance it for me. Let me know how Michigan's 'guy who can coach the hell out of linebackers' makes sense, while also adding Michigan's actual linebacker coach.

They hired a rising talent in Jeff Hafley who has not even had DC in his title, let alone enough experience to man that position alone. Mattison brings experience and an easier transition when Jeff's ready.
It's not that complicated.
Also, bringing in Mattison and Washington also guts Michigan, who got close to stealing Zach Harrison last year.

That's just half of it, though. I get the reasons the fanbase has decided are good enough for the hire. But we're paying this guy more than anybody else? To be the transitioner for a year or two? It's not complicated. It's not exactly wise, either.
