2019 Fall Camp and Other Tidbits

Explanation requested. Katzenmoyer and Hilliard’s requests to wear retired numbers seemed like pretty big deals, and they grew up here.

The number has been retired since 2000, but Chambers appears to have received permission to wear it, much like Justin Hilliard got permission to wear Chic Harley's No. 47.

FOUR BOLD PREDICTIONS FOR THE 2019 OHIO STATE BUCKEYES

Well, it's exactly eight weeks until Ohio State opens their season at home on Aug. 31 at noon against Florida Atlantic.

The Buckeyes come in on paper with a young, but talented squad led by first-year head coach Ryan Day and several new assistant coaches.

It wouldn't be (almost) football season without some #bold #predictions, right? Let's do it now.

GARRETT WILSON CRACKS THE WIDE RECEIVER ROTATION
Wilson came in to Ohio State as a five-star prospect, rated as the No. 20 overall player in the 2019 class. He stuck with the Buckeyes despite Urban Meyer's retirement, saying that he is excited to play for Ryan Day. He has certainly looked the part of a five-star prospect after enrolling, and could get on the field right away.

The one thing standing in the way will be the returning talent on the roster. K.J. Hill will be a redshirt senior, and one who should catch 100 passes after snagging 70 a season ago. Binjimen Victor (21 catches, four touchdowns) and Austin Mack (26 catches, one touchdown) will also be seniors and Chris Olave, fresh off an incredible end-of-season run, will be a sophomore.

But I think Wilson will prove too electric to keep off the field entirely and with the frequency that Ohio State substitutes at wide receiver, it's safe to say he will receive some playing time.

OHIO STATE RETURNS TO "BIA" STATUS
After the departure of Kerry Coombs and somewhat of a talent exodus, Ohio State's defense struggled last year. Those struggles rippled somewhat back to the secondary. This season, Ryan Day has completely re-tooled the defensive coaching staff: Greg Mattison and Jeff Hafley come in to coordinate, Matt Barnes will work with the secondary, and Al Washington has come in to help with the linebackers.

Once again, I think that this will ripple back and help the secondary overall. Jeffrey Okudah returns as a junior, and one who will likely be a first-round pick if he has a strong season. Shaun Wade, who was good a year ago, will be a redshirt sophomore with a lot of hype. Jordan Fuller could have been an early-round pick last year, but decided to stay in school to get his degree and potentially improve his draft stock.

All of these reasons combined should create optimism for this prediction.

Big Ten media writes has picked scUM to win the Big this year. Of note is that since 2011 the writers have picked the winner correct exactly twice. That's a winning percentage of 25%!!!!!! You could say it's the kiss of death!

This just blows my mind. They get so much credit for literally doing nothing.

Jim Harbaugh is the most overrated coach I think I've ever seen.

Let them have the preseason Championship.

Side note, we get updates today!!!

Using Big Ten Predictions As Motivation: ‘Our guys read it'

Parris-Campbell-Michigan-Look-Back-1170x780.jpg

For the first time in years, Ohio State is not the clear-cut favorite to win the Big Ten.

A variety of outlets have picked Michigan to win the league, including a poll of Big Ten media conducted by Cleveland.com. The Wolverines have better odds to make the College Football Playoff than the Buckeyes at some Las Vegas casinos, and ESPN’s computerized college football phrenology system, FEI, gives OSU just an 8.7 percent chance of winning the division.

A quick refresher: The Buckeyes have won the league in back-to-back seasons, and are coming off a 62-39 thumping of a favored Michigan team last November.

The Wolverines haven’t won the conference since 2004, and have only beaten the Ohio State once since then. If you’re the typical reader of this site, you know all of this already. But you’re probably okay with reading it again.

However, after a decade and a half of playing second (or third, or fourth) fiddle, Michigan is widely considered the favorite to win the league this fall.

It’s something the Buckeyes have taken note of.

“I think our guys read it, they see it. Especially with social media, it’s more available than ever,” said head coach Ryan Day.

That’s true, and the program has used previous examples in its internal videos. This spring, reporters attending a practice saw a Ohio State/Michigan highlight reel on the video board at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center that included a headline about the Wolverines being favorites in the 2018 game.

Senior wide receiver K.J. Hill talked openly about the motivation that Michigan’s status as a favorite brings.

“We’re the underdogs again this year, so it’s just more fuel and more for us to prove ourselves throughout the season and then when we get there to unleash on them with everything we’ve put in,” Hill said.

But while the Buckeyes are aware of the perception that they’re about to get passed by, they’re not exactly obsessing about it.

“That’s not something that we focus on,” Day said. “I’ve talked to our guys about the expectations at Ohio State couldn’t be any higher year in and year out. We know that. But if we focus on all that, we can get ourselves distracted because it really doesn’t matter. I know that sounds like coach-speak, but it’s true.”
