2019-2020 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

This team is so fucking schizophrenic. If you would have told me in November that they would beat four top-ten teams, including some blowouts and beat UNC by the largest margin ever at the Dean Dome (I know they ended up sucking this year, but I said "in November") and told me we would be scrapping to get to .500 in the conference heading into March, I'd say you're goofy. But here we are.

I do think this team, on a neutral court, has the huevos to play with and beat anybody. Especially if they can get decent backcourt play.

I don't think this team can do it enough times in a row to go very far. Everytime they play well for a game or two, they seem to follow it up with a stinker.

I was watching post game presser and they said high ankle sprain if so that could be a huge problem. Might be gone until the NCAA tournament.
And that's fine. Rest Young through the B1G tournament and hope he can get the ankle well enough to give you 20-25 mins a game in the NCAAs. Then pray to Xenu that the backcourt can get hot for few games and make a little run.

It is remarkable that this team made it back into the top-25 after that rough month of January which caused them to drop out.
This team is confusing as hell. They've beat some really good teams...I mean really good and a couple times in dominant fashion. They've also lost some absolute head-scratchers. ON any given night, these guys seem like they can beat anyone. On any other given night, they seem like they could lose to anyone. Weirdest year that I can remember and I've been following since the Randy Ayers/Jimmy Jackson/Treg Lee/Chris Jent/Perry Carter days.

Very Strange

“Despite the records being somewhat similar, we’re very different in terms of when you look at the quality of wins across the board it’s a significant difference than it was last year,” Holtmann said before a loss to Iowa. “In a lot of ways the numbers back that up ... the seasons are very different even though they can appear on the surface to be similar in a lot of ways. When you look at the numbers, they’re definitely different."

Ohio State’s 2018-19 to 2019-20 through 27 games

2018-19
2019-20
Points 70.0 71.9
Rebounds 32.2 36.7
Assists 14.0 13.9
Steals 5.9 4.9
Blocks 2.6 3.4
Field Goal 44.7% 44.8%
Three-Point 35.1% 37.9%
Free Throw 72.6% 73.7%

Ohio State is producing at the same rate, albeit against better competition, as last year. Its non-conference schedule featured four games against ranked opponents; there were none in 2018-19. Eight Big Ten teams made the tournament last season with Ohio State having the lowest seed at No. 11. There are up to 10 projected to make it this season with OSU currently projected as a No. 6.

remarkably similar seasons. main difference is that we started last season ranked.

  • 1-loss non-conference record
  • really bad january (6 losses last year, 5 losses this year)
  • 7-9 with 4 games to go last year; 8-8 this year
  • major personnel issue at end of 2019 regular season (kaleb); major personnel issues at end of 2020 regular season (young and carton)

edit: noted ho1tmann's comment in quoted post. i certainly should have noted that this team's wins are far better.
