2019-2020 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

Preseason mags are out.

Lindy's has OSU at #17 in the country and #3 in the B1G behind MSU and MD. Interesting point they make, the Buckeyes were just 2-9 against top-25 teams last season. I think it is a bit unfair to simply focus on the last 11 games and cherry pick looking only at the results vs six ranked teams and margin of defeat there like Lindy's does, though, since they played a couple of those games without Kaleb and also three were against elite teams in MSU and Purdue. Houston was also a great team that may never get the respect they deserved. Lindy's newsflash: bubble team struggled mightily against top-10 teams. But no doubt OSU has done poorly vs top-25 competition if you look at the results from the last 7 years combined, and that trend needs to change in order for OSU to be the type of team a lot of people are expecting them to be.

And when I say change, I'm thinking go 5-5 instead of 2-9. That kind of change.

Street & Smith's has OSU #6 in the B1G and not ranked in the top-25.
osu not in the top 25? okay. whatever.

but osu ranked #6 in the b1g?

i see street & smith has iowa two spots ahead of osu, with wisconsin being 5th. iowa at 4th? really? does s&s know how much they've lost? heck, bohannon's season is in jeopardy. putting iowa at 4th tells me all i need to know about how much thought s&s put into their top 25 and big ten rankings.
Maybe they didn't get the memo that Tyler Cook and Ethan Happ aren't in college anymore.

Iowa and Wisconsin both being better than OSU this year - as predicted by Street & Smith's - is highly unlikely. I think they will both be worse than OSU.
i can somewhat see that wisconsin may actually be a better team without happ. for as important as he was, the badgers never played the ryan/gard style with a usage-dominating center who didn't have a game outside of 6 feet and who was a liability in the final minutes of a close game. still wouldn't put wisconsin above osu, but it at least makes a modicum of sense compared to iowa at 4th.

I think S&S relied really heavily on last year's standings and shuffled a few teams around. I agree that the loss of a focal post player has the effect of forcing other guys to step up the following season and play better with more opportunities, many times those teams achieve more than expected. But I see OSU as having better overall talent and more upside compared with Wisconsin.

Its tough to say where to put us given that new faces will be playing significant roles. I could see as high as second to as low as 7th in the league. If I had to guess right now, I'd probably have us 3-4 in the league and 20-25 in the country. I think Carton and Liddell are ready physically to compete at this level. I think we will be OK at pg, but we need to shoot better, particularly from the 2-3

such is the case with pretty much everyone with the exception of msu, maryland, and illinois. purdue, ttun, wisconsin, and iowa (among all others) will certainly be dealing with plenty of new faces at key positions. the difference, however, is that no one else but msu brings in the quality of new faces that osu will.

but maybe the biggest difference is coaching. after beilein's departure, izzo is the only guy one would feel confident placing above ho1tmann. painter is arguable, especially since he lost his vitally important offensive coordinator. is anyone taking mccaffery, gard, miller, howard, underwood, or pitino over the guy who has outperformed expectations each season? outside of a couple guys, no one deserves near the benefit of the doubt that ho1tmann does.

Yep, everyone is replacing someone, but we were 8-12 in conference last year, 7-8 games behind Purdue and Mich. I do think with what some of those teams lost that we will definitely move up. I think the difference between 3rd-7th is how good the guys are that we've never seen play in an OSU uniform, but I'm optimistic that we will be in the top 4 in the conference and coaching is one of the reasons for that.

You left out some decent coaches on your list (Turgeon, Hoiberg specifically). I wouldn't put Holtmann over Painter yet because there just isn't enough sample size. Not saying I'd want to make a trade, but in ranking B1G coaches, Painter would be above him.

When you bring up the 8-12 mark in league play last year, it does seem ambitious to expect an improvement to something more like 15-5 or 14-6, in spite of losing the two most effective scoring guards on the team.

Yeah, but they were not all that CONSISTANTLY effective, which is why we were 8-12. Hopefully the addition of the incoming freshmen and a transfer will be an upgrade.

Lindy’s preseason magazine picks Ohio State third in Big Ten basketball

Although the magazine predicts that the Buckeyes will be “ready to play deep into March,” they are projected only to reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament for a third straight year.

Michigan State is pegged to win the conference followed by Maryland. Six Big Ten teams are forecasted to reach the Tournament: Michigan State, Illinois, Maryland, Ohio State, Purdue and Wisconsin with the Spartans and Terrapins the only ones to reach the Sweet Sixteen.

Michigan State is predicted to win the national title.

Individually, Ohio State junior CJ Walker is one of six transfers to be deemed “rumble ready” to make an impact this season. Along with sophomores Luther Muhammad and Duane Washington Jr. and freshman D.J. Carton, the Buckeyes are ranked as having the No. 7 backcourt in the nation.

Liddell is rated the No. 28 player in the nation, nearly 50 spots higher than his other teammate to make the nation’s top 150: Kaleb Wesson at No. 77.

“After a torrid start, Ohio State left the Associated Press Top 25 last year for good on Jan. 14,” the magazine concludes. “The Buckeyes figure to start there and, depending on how quickly the freshmen catch on, ought to rank higher than they started when the NCAA Tournament arrives.”
