2019-2020 College Basketball Discussion (Official Thread)

hate, hate, HATE the idea of going to a 24-second clock, which i doubt the ncaa would do. one of the great things about college basketball is all the starkly contrasted strategies. i mean, the slower pace is a primary reason that the big ten tends to outperform its overall recruiting rankings come march. we impose our will onto teams that aren't used to a halfcourt, more physical style. see: ohio state versus iowa state.

and no, jim, not "everyone" wants the game to be faster.

Boeheim wants it because if it takes 5-7 seconds to get into your offense, that leaves only 12-14 seconds to break down his zone defense to get a decent shot. I didn't like it when they went to the 30 second clock. 35 seems like a good number after change of possession and maybe knock it down to 20-25 on offensive rebound, fouls or kicked ball in the half court.

24 seconds would be a disaster on offense. These are college kids, they don't have the talent of NBA players to create (and make) shots with very little separation. That doesn't even get into full-court pressing issues.

30 seconds is fine. A reset to 20 after an ORB would be okay too, since the offensive team is already on that side of the court.

Looking ahead to this season, I would say one of the most underrated teams in all of college basketball is going to be New Mexico State. They won 30 games last season and only lose a couple of contributors from a roster that went 10 deep and spread the production very evenly. I believe they have 8 Seniors. They went toe to toe with Auburn who was as good as any team in college basketball in March. This New Mexico State team is going to be poised to make a lot of noise by the end of the season. Of course they are heavy favorites to win the WAC, but at the same time I'm expecting the media will largely overlook them due to their conference and either ignorance of how good they were or unwillingness to step out on a limb. Matchups matter, but I would guess that they won't be 1 & done in the tourney again.

scrimmages are scrimmages, but there are many reports that duke looked woeful in their contest versus a good d2 team. might be a worse shooting team than last year, which is not good. which is great.
Duke is going to take a step back this year compared to last for sure. I noticed some publications are actually picking UL as the ACC preseason #1. I think your instincts are right and you are onto something here re: Duke struggling with perimeter shooting.

Short-handed Louisville basketball sweats out exhibition win over Bellarmine

Louisville basketball: U of L takes on Bellarmine at the KFC Yum Center
With Tuesday night's exhibition in the books, Bellarmine looks like a team that's ready to compete for another Division II national title. Louisville, meanwhile, looks like a team that needs to get healthy – and a team that has plenty of room for improvement no matter who's available.

The Cardinals pulled away late at the KFC Yum Center to top the Knights 75-65 in front of the home crowd, which had to sweat it out.

Louisville junior forward Jordan Nwora, the preseason ACC player of the year, was critical in the second half. He finished the game with 28 points, 15 coming in the final 20 minutes. Redshirt senior forward Dwayne Sutton had a double-double, with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman forward Samuell Williamson had 17 points and 9 boards as well.

Bellarmine's veteran savvy and ball control was key in the first half. The Knights led 35-33 at the half, with Male grad Alex Cook leading the way with 12 points. Nwora led Louisville at the break with 13.

Louisville center Steven Enoch didn't play in the scrimmage due to a deep thigh bruise. Sutton moved to center in his place in the starting lineup, making way for freshman Samuell Williamson to start as well. Junior center Malik Williams and freshman guard David Johnson were also sidelined with injuries, as expected.

One thing that makes basically no sense: Virginia ranked in the national top-10 in the preseason coaches poll. They lost by far their 3 best players and all they have left from their title team is role players. I don't think they should be in the top-25 unless and until they earn their way in based on results this season.
