2019-2020 B1G Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

PSU might be the surprise team in the B1G this season. They had an impressive win at Georgetown yesterday and have gotten off to a hot start. If they avoid the bad nonconference losses that Chambers teams always tend to have, they could be in line to make the NCAA tourney.

I don't why it should be a surprise, though. As soon as Stevens said he was back the assumption should have been that PSU would be good. With the possible emergence of Jones as a high-level shooter for them, they could be really good.

Rough start to Minny's season, falling short in a comeback bid at Utah to end up 1-3 in their first 4 games. They got some good pieces but they really need a couple of their wings/forwards to step it up more and if Marcus Carr is going to get to the line so frequently, he's really going to need to start shooting better than 46% from there.

PSU hasn't made the tourney since 2011. In preseason predictions they weren't highly ranked in the conference. Them making it would be a surprise for most people that are used to PSU falling short and expected more of the same. I think they should outperform the preseason expectations significantly.

purdue beating chicago state by only 10 points (38-28) at the half. they're shooting only 41% overall and 24% (5/21) behind the arc. they were freakin' losing with 4 minutes to go.

to put this into perspective, csu just lost to eastern illinois by 64. yes... 64. they're kenpom's worst team (353/353) after being 351st last year and 346th the year before.

Nebraska finally gets a win and looks pretty good doing it, putting up 90 points on a South Dakota St team that took USC to the wire.

Now I know everyone's going to be skeptical about Nebraska for a while because of those first two games they lost, but after watching some of the game that they won, I will say this about them: 1) they have some exceptionally quick guards (Cam Mack, in particular), and 2) they have a collection of somewhat unique players that, once they get on offense, gives them a lot of mis-matches all over the floor. This freshman Kevin Cross is like a poor man's Draymond.

The difference for Nebraska in this game against SD St was that they played better defense in the first half than they have been and this allowed them to dictate the pace of the game, really pushing transition offense off turnovers and missed shots. And most teams that let Nebraska do that are going to be in trouble because the Husker guards just FLY up and down the court and, as I said, they have a lot of mismatches they can quickly exploit to their fullest when the opponent doesn't have its defense fully set.

With a team of players that are so new to each other and who will be new to B1G play, there will be some growing pains, for sure. It could be a downward spiral situation for them once they get in conference or it could be one of those things where they steadily acclimate and get better at imposing their will on games and start to get some wins that surprise some people--I really could see it going either way. I do think Nebraska is the team that will make the biggest leap from this season to next and expect that Hoiberg will have his team in the top half of the conference by the time March of 2021 rolls around

To be fair, that win was like a matchup between OSU vs Ohio Wesleyan. Stetson most recently lost to IPFW by over 20 points.

That's an insult to Ohio Wesleyan. Trinity Baptist College has 377 students. The Battling Bishops would whoop that ass.

Two-Minute Drill: Chris Holtmann, Buckeyes Preview Stetson

Chris-Holtmann-PreIowa.jpg

Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann met with the media on Friday to preview the Buckeyes’ upcoming game against Stetson on Monday night. Holtmann provided an update on Andre Wesson, talked about the response to the win against Villanova, and his recruiting class.

Freshman forward E.J. Liddell and redshirt senior guard Danny Hummer also answered questions from reporters. The players talked about the impact of the Villanova win and their approach for the upcoming games.

Here’s a summary of what was said at interviews.

Chris Holtmann
+ They have a couple of days of practice including a day off which is unique at this time of the year. They will clean up things from Villanova and dive into film. They have to balance taking the time to get better and preparing for their opponent. They will continue to find that balance and move forward.

+ Andre Wesson is in the process of working his way back. They will be cautious about when is the right time for him. He has not practiced yet.

+ They will spend some time talking about not taking one win too far. Perspective is really important at this time of the year. “Your season is never defined by one particular game, unless it’s in March or April really. At this time of the year, whether you win or lose it’s about your response.”

+ The Villanova game was unique in that his players had a laser focus. It’s hard to expect that when you factor in the shooting success Ohio State had and the struggles Villanova had.

+ Maturity and great leadership is a requirement for handling success the right way.

+ He did not sleep very well after the Villanova win. He said he sleeps much better after a game like that than after a loss, it’s hard to sleep after a loss if it’s a late tip. But after Villanova, he got a text from Kaleb Wesson asking a question at 1:30 AM and Coach Holtmann was up watching film. Wesson was also up watching film. They both probably went to bed around 2:30 AM or 3:00 AM.

+ This was the hardest scheduling season he had.

+ He never looks at expected win percentages in today’s college basketball. He never assumes he will be able to play everyone on the bench. It’s a different day in college basketball.

+ They did get two letters of intent this week. They are really excited about the addition of the two young men. He thinks both guys have a unique ability to impact the way they want to play and they both fit a need.

+ Eugene Brown II with his versatility and his ability to play multiple positions on the perimeter will be important and Zed Key with his physicality and length and frame and his ability to score with his back to the basket which is unique.

+ They just love these two kids and their families. They are terrific fits and terrific people.

+ Even though these two additions puts them over their scholarship limit, they felt these two guys were worth it and Holtmann said he has no concerns about everything working out.

+ Kaleb Wesson’s interest in the NBA last year was definitely a factor. Wesson will have options at the end of the year and they will discuss that later. They didn’t offer and over-sign just for that reason though. But they always try to prepare and look ahead.

+ They are just looking for the right fits. Last years class was midwest centered but this was a it unique and more national. They just fell in love with these two guys and felt really strongly about them.

+ The consistent part of recruiting will still be in Ohio and the surrounding areas. Recruiting Ohio will continue to be a priority for them. “You’re always aware of the talent in your state.”

Even though other things could open up a scholarship, it sounds like the "writing is on the wall" for Kaleb Wesson's status next season, i.e. going to the NBA.....
