2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

Red Zone doesn't mean shit if they're ripping off 75 yard runs and completing 50 yard back-breakers. BTW, their TEs had catches of 42, 41 and 41 yards Saturday. That's terrifying with this "defense."
Their whole offense is off tackle and then play action down the seams. They dont throw outside much.

So opportunities are there for picks but unfortunately we need good safety play. Expect Wade to play a lot.

This is probably been pointed out before on this thread but I’ve went back and watched all the big plays we’ve given up this season and while scheming is a big part of it, players aren’t making plays when they are put in the correct position e.g. on Both of MD’s long TD runs an OSU defender missed an open field tackle and/or took themselves out of the play when they were in position to make a stop. We can blame coaching for a lot of things (mainly talent spotting), but they can’t go out there and make tackles. Compared to our teams of the past, we just don’t have defensive players with a high football IQ this year. It’s bad for this season, but with these kids athletism and youth (and our recruiting), they can only get better. We are just really lucky to have a high powered offense this year.

If you gave this current starting unit to Mark Dantonio, Don Brown, Nick Saban, Brent Venebles, etc....I think you’d be seeing much improved play.

I just don’t think there’d be this level of Dysfunctionality. They can’t even run fit properly when the outside contain guy is completely taking himself out of the play thinking he actually has outside help leverage and it’s not even close to being there.

Missed tackles in the hole are one thing. Safeties and linebackers not knowing how to leverage the play is another.

We’ve had way too much of both, but the fact these guys are 11 weeks in and don’t know how to fit against a power run is staggering. I don’t know what else to say.

The first TD run there was a missed tackle by the S, but there is a reason he missed. There was no contain, because Arnette bought the farm and was out of position badly leaving the alley too wide for the S, there was no hep from the Will because he took the B gap on the offenses right side for some unknown godforsaken reason that is beyond me. If the W and contain are in the correct positions, then the S has a much easier play to make. That is 90% coaching.

look on one play I saw the LB’s run up and actively engage the OL.... I dont know anything about coaching football or anything but this seems like a BAD idea.. I thought the LB’s we’re suppose to try to stay unblocked as long as possible and make the play... not actively engage the OL like a D Lineman..

I tend to agree to a point. I think if we had any of those other coaches you named for our team they’d be coached better against the inferior opponents who don’t have multiple playmakers. Meaning, the Purdue’s and Maryland’s of the world (each had one guy tourching us) would be brought down to earth. I think those other coaches would of been quicker to realize that while we are super athletic, our defensive IQ is lacking and would have simplified things way sooner. Press coverage and walking up linebackers is reserved for defenses that have great football instincts and discipline. Our players have not shown either consistently this season.

I still believe we’d get shredded by any well coached offense and/or a team with 2-3 weapons. As multiple people have pointed out, most of Our problems are a result of one (usually multiple) defender missing an assignment or tackle and no one being in a position to take up the slack. Defense is dependent on everyone knowing what they are doing. It’s evident that that doesn’t happen every play. I know players not knowing where they are going is a classic coaching problem, but I refuse to believe it 11 games into the season. I’m more inclined to think they can’t fully comprehend where they are supposed to go rather than not knowing. At this level, that’s on the player. Can lead a horse to the well, but can’t force them to drink.

And as a side note, I blame the coaches for not identifying players on defense who do understand these concepts on a regular basis. I find it hard to believe that a deep team full of 4 and 5 stars can’t find the right people. That is on the coaches. If these are the best 11 defenders on our team when our defensive recruiting is supposed to be the backbone of our program, we are in deep trouble for the future. Hopefully, this is just a one year blip

Just sayin': Did anyone else notice how many Seniors (not counting rsJuniors) are on the (4 deep) defense? There was only one: Dante Booker

https://www.ourlads.com/ncaa-football-depth-charts/depth-chart/ohio-state/91533

Theoretically everybody but Booker could return next year. Obviously Nick Bosa won't and Dre'Mont Jones probably won't either.

The good news: We (possibily) could have 29 of the top 32 players on defense return for next year, plus some really good incoming Freshmen.

The bad news: They really haven't played that well this year.
