2018-2019 College Basketball Discussion (Official Thread)

Buzz Williams was head coach from 2014 to 2019, he got the Hokies into the Dance the last 3 of his 5 seasons. Prior to that, Virginia Tech had been to the tournament just 4 times in the last 35 years (2007, 1996, 1986, 1985).

He's a good coach, not sure why he's bringing a scrub like Tony Benford to his staff in Aggie Land, but I have a hunch it doesn't have to do with his on-court coaching...

Juggalo board is bringing the lulz. They have a coaching changes thread that pretty much has become a discussion of which schools they hope will hire Cronin away because he's clearly held them back. Is there any other school out there that is so comically delusional about their place on the athletic food chain?

There's a certain shit-hole to the north that comes to mind.

What a thoroughly average hire

They did steal him from his Alma Mater (TCU), but he was born in North Hollywood. 3 times reached the Sweet 16 in his 16 seasons as a head coach- none since 2009 when he made the Elite 8 at Pitt.

Oh and his first Sweet 16 in 2003 was coming off Ben Howland’s 28-5, Sweet 16 squad before Howland went to UCLA. I’d say he’s made 2 on his own and not in 10 years, mixed with a lot of good Pitt teams bowing out early.

What's funny about UCLA wanting to hire Dixon is he is the protege of Ben Howland, who UCLA lured from Pitt like 15 years ago before eventually running him out of town due to his teams having a boring style of play.

Howland had a nice 3 year stretch in the middle before falling off entirely.

I think Dixon is a good coach. He should have UCLA in the tournament regularly, but consider me unimpressed on a national level.

Pitt teams were always allowed to beat the shit out of teams during conference play.....then they'd get bounced from the tournament when that would get called. I could always count on them bowing out early when I'd do my bracket.

Personally, I wouldn't be excited about him, if that is who UCLA ultimately hires. His three teams at TCU averaged being 32nd in the country per Kenpom, I just dont see that level of success being a win at UCLA.

I'll never forget the 2011 tourney where Pitt was basically handed a path to the final four, and still somehow managed to fuck it up and get bounced by Butler in the second round lmao.

Probably will get better overall talent to UCLA though, you'd think at least.

UCLA is really butchering this hire. Thay have had over 90 days with a vacancy, and want Dixon but dont want to pay the $8 million buyout, so they may just be moving on to another candidate. What a cluster.

Is there absolutely no way that Beard or Pearl will accept their offer? It seems like the correct move would be to throw as much money at those guys as possible.
