2017 tOSU Defense Discussion

I agree.

How did this happen? Deshaun Watson? Their defense has been just has good as their offense. They’re maintaining top level play with consistency.
Bret Venables #1 and good QBs #2.

Taj Boyd was awesome and then Watson took it to another level.

So proud of how the defense did last night.. I mean it wasn't even a ball game if the offense doesn't spot Wisconsin 18 points.

It's safe to say that the Worely experiment inside was a massive failure because once we moved him outside a lot of our issues went away.

We should have knew better looking back on it now... we only had Raekwon leave so moving Worely meant learning a new position for him. Better to just replace the vacant starter then to move Worely and create 2 new starters

Even though I had some doubts last season, it's clear that Watson was one of the best college QBs of the last 25 years. I also think that Meyer is too caught up with marrying his old offense with parts of others, while Clemson has clearly found a system that works better and more consistently.

Yep, it's definitely been an improvement, although there are still coverage issues.

Next year is going to be an adventure. Worley graduates, Baker is most likely gone, and Borland & Harrison both return as solid starters with limitations. Did Booker get hurt? I went back and looked through game logs and didn't see him register any stats after the Iowa game. I though that he'd at least be on special teams even though he lost the starting spot.

If Borland's limitations are just a product of youth, he's an ideal run stuffer, but if it's athleticism it's not going to work against elite teams. Not sure how far along Browning is, but he is the ideal replacement. There's also Werner, who's flashed on special teams. And Jones, but I don't remember much from him all year. Past that, I have no idea who else will be a contributor.

Personally I think Okudah makes the jump next year and Sheffield will be better as well now having a year of playing time under his belt. We have some phenomenal talent at LB that just needs to develop. They gave Borland a shot and he stepped up big time. Plus, it's not a done deal for Baker. Methinks he should stay another year to improve his draft status.

The corners will be great next year and Fuller will be outstanding. It will come down to who is that 2nd safety and with some of the bigger kids we recruited lately I like the prospects of Pryor coming in and playing well.

I really like the way this defense has played the past few weeks since we sat Booker (not to slam him).

Agreed. There will be great competition between Pryor and Wade for that open spot imo.

Really hope we can get Schiano back for another year. I think the defensive backs have shown the most improvement out of anyone. Remember the first game against Indiana? Arnette and Sheffield couldn't cover anyone. Now they are shutting people down
Idk where you see Sheffield and Arnette shutting anyone down. They look like the weakest of links in the defense outside of the LBs. I wouldn't be surprised if Okudah and Riep pass them both up next year as starters. Sheffield is overrated, and frequently gets beat. Arnette is incredibly cocky for being so below average by OSU standards. I think they can fight for nickel PT, IMO but not starting. OSU has a had a run of guys leaving and someone stepping up and starting the next year from Roby to Grant to Apple, etc. Sheffield not Arnette is ready for that role IMO. Davis put in work on Sheffield and Arnette until Schiano got frustrated and threw Ward on him to shut him down. And Davis is only a freaking freshman! I would also love to see Williamson in the mix for CB as well

Between Sheffield and Arnette, I'm more optimistic about Arnette.
