Three things, however :


1) I haven't exactly been shy about criticizing poor coaching on the Ohio State staff in the past. And to some degree, I think this chart perfectly illustrates why that is necessary : it doesn't matter how good of a recruiter a coach is if he can't coach, since Alabama has us all beat on that front anyway.

We win and die against Alabama on the quality of our coaching staff, and that is why it's so necessary to correct deficits as we see them. Sure, we can coast against the Indianas and the MSUs of the world on talent alone, but it's not going to work against Saban or Venables.

On the flip side, calling for Fickells head when the problem lay in Withers wasn't going to solve anything either. Glad to say BP wasn't full of that crowd.


2) I would be shocked if Clemson last year had a better curve than we did, yet they managed to beat Alabama. And I'm quite sure a chart in 2014 would also look pretty similar.

Alabama has a ton of talent, but they're not unbeatable by any means. Urban Meyer, Schiano, and Wilson - if anyone can do it, I sure as hell would put my money on those guys.


3) As per Clemson last year, and in slight contradiction to point 1: make sure you have a killer QB recruiter. Maybe Beck actually wasn't entirely useless?

I have finals coming up next week so I'll literally do anything to avoid studying right now haha. All of your points are valid. In my first post, I posited that it's time to put up or shut up this year. We have the talent, the returning starters, the depth, the coaching names, and the schedule to blow the doors off of every team we play. The minimum acceptable season is 11-1 with a Playoff berth. Anything less, and it's another year that the window closes ever so slightly.

I was too lazy to look up if he was the primary recruiter on any of our QBs, and as the saying goes, the fastest way to answer any question is to assert an answer on the Internet.

Definitely agree on the second point. I meant he wasn't completely useless in that he (might have) recruited Haskins or got us in the lead for Jones. Now that he's no longer here to bungle things up, that might actually be somewhat beneficial.

Actually Beck was a very good recruiter! All of the QBs on our roster not named JT Barrett were brought in by Beck, or in Burrow's case, kept by Beck. And Emory Jones was also a Beck recruit win as well, that's why losing Beck made OSU have to almost re-recruit Jones(though I believe all is good now).

And fully agree @OregonBuckeye , recruiting only means so much if you cant develop the talent that you recruited.

Coaching and scheme is what beats Alabama. Trying to line up and play them straight up will almost never work, because they have just too much talent. But the glaring weakness that Saban still hasn't corrected(which still baffles me) is playing against up tempo teams with true DT QBs or QBs that have enough athleticism to move the pocket. Since 2010, these are the QBs and the offensive systems they ran when they beat Alabama:
Deshaun Watson- Spread
Cardale Jones- Spread
Chad Kelly- Spread
Bo Wallace- Spread
Johnny Manziel- Spread
Stephen Garcia-Pro style
Jordan Jefferson- Spread
Cam Newton- Spread
And a fluke loss in 2011 to LSU which was a straight defensive war.

Every QB in that list could run and throw, and though Garcia and Wallace may have been the least athletic, they could do enough to be dangerous with their feet. A team better have the perfect playcalling, great scheme and enough talent to pull out a win against Bama. And keeping the offense in an up tempo style can negate some of the athletes on the Alabama front 7, and not allow them to keep throwing out waves of talented backups to give them breathers. Playing FSU for their first game this season will be very interesting, because Deondre Francois fits those categories, but not sure if the FSU scheme of being more pro style will help them win. I could see OSU giving Bama a very good run for their money this year if/when we see them in the CFP
