2017 Offensive Coordinator Discussion

I guess the talent level of last years team obscured the coaching issues at the end of last season.
This year was a better indicator of what we had as coaches on offense. And it was a mess.
The QB room should be thrilled by the addition of Day.

Comments from Bucknuts.....

Plan to overhaul offense being executed to perfection

If multiple reports from Tuesday are true, Wilson will be hired as the Buckeyes’ new offensive coordinator.

.
To be clear, we’re still waiting confirmation on the hiring of Wilson, but presuming it is true, Urban Meyer has done an excellent job of overhauling his offensive staff.

As I have pointed out many times over the last few weeks, if Wilson did something truly egregious, he would have been fired, period. The school that fired legend Bobby Knight – in the sport that truly matters in Bloomington – was not going to play nice with Kevin Wilson if he did something really bad.

Was he tough on his players? Was he abrasive with administrators? I have no doubt about it. But if he did something on the Tim Beckman level, he would have been fired, just like Illinois fired Beckman (with no buyout).

So, this is why Urban Meyer was not concerned about a PR backlash. There won’t be one.

Bottom line is this is great news for an Ohio State offense that needs a bright offensive mind like Wilson calling the shots. He’s excellent at designing plays and knowing when to use them in games. He’s also adept at making in-game adjustments when the defense presents something he wasn’t expecting to see.

As for what this means for Ed Warinner, I think he will be demoted to co-OC/offensive line coach, although OSU would never publicly say it was a demotion. Warinner would still have the co-OC title, which might mitigate any personal embarrassment he would have.

If this would transpire, Greg Studrawa could still stay on the staff as TE coach/co-O-line coach, or something along those lines. Keep in mind that college football will likely adopt a rule in April that will allow teams to have 10 assistant coaches, instead of nine, meaning there would be room to add Wilson and Day without getting rid of anyone currently on the staff. (Since Beck has departed.)

Ohio State fans should be happy if Warinner sticks around as offensive line coach since that is his strength.

So, wondering how much of Kelly being on the market at the same time as Wilson has to do with the time between reports this morning and something official being announced. Could it be that they are trying to work a way to get both? I know it was brought up in jest before, but this really has me wondering if there isn't some kind of larger deal being brokered.

Highly doubt that it would happen given that both guys are used to being "the man in charge", but let's see how it could happen. First, everyone knows that Kelly is a one year assistant and then on to his next college head coaching job. Need to see what his buyout with the 49ers was. Sometimes, you get the full amount to sit out. Not sure what happens if he was to take the OC job. Maybe he gets some type of prorated settlement. If he was to be strictly an analyst for the Bucks with little compensation, maybe he gets the whole buyout. So perhaps they are looking to see how he can make the most money and still be on the staff.

Now for Wilson. He could come in as OC (most likely scenario) but maybe Ohio State wants him in a more low profile position like offensive analyst for now. He works with Kelly and Day for a year knowing that Kelly is eventually going to take a head coaching spot. The Indiana thing blows over, Kelly moves on, and Wilson takes the OC.

Do I think this is going to happen? No, but it sure is fun to speculate about.

If there was a matter of trying to get both into the fold, my guess would be, Wilson as OC and Kelly as an analyst. Like you said, Kelly is likely a one year layover and gone. Wilson could be here for a couple of years. I think this would be the best case scenario long term.

Will it happen? Likely not, but I agree, fun to speculate...

Only way I see us getting Kelly is if he comes on as an analyst for a year to let things settle and find a new HC gig. As to the buyout, Kelly isn't the type to sit on his hands for a year. Also, he loves being in charge, so I can't see him as an OC, but an analyst has a detachment to where he might be able to handle it. It's more of a consultant job than and assistant job. I think he heads back to college as a HC this year or next. Are any teams looking for a HC?

Urban is moving exactly in the direction we were all hoping for. Beck out and a NFL QB Coach to replace him is going to immediately improve QB production. Urban now has 3 former NFL coaches on his staff. Looking forward to his next move to bring in a great Offensive mind at Offensive Coordinator.

This should make you guys feel better about the loss Monday

Just think if we were sitting here like they are in Austin, trying to figure out why this stupid motherfucker was just hired after Nebraska and OSU didn't want him. LOL

Damn are we a lucky bunch now. Of course Bama and Clemson can make fun of the fact that we should maybe have at least one more title, but for some reason that doesn't bother me as much now.

Just as desperation is a stinky cologne, optimism is a delightful and refreshing cocktail of happiness.
