2017 College Football Playoffs (and Other Bowl Games)

Miami loses ACCCG, doubtful they get in. Resume wouldn't be good enough.
Miami beating Clemson in ACCCG should remove Clemson from the equation.

I don't buy into that BS about forgiving the loss to Syracuse because the QB was injured. An L is an L. Shoulda' beat 'em anyway with the talent on that team.

ACC won the natty and kicked ass in the bowls last year and you'd have one loss to a top team and the blowout of ND. Hard even for me to put a two loss OSU team that got murdered by IOWA over one loss Miami. Of course, I don't think that any team in the BIG is particularly good beside OSU when they come to play, and maybe Wiscy. I do think that putting a second L on Clemson would make them go away.

But that would be it - even VT now has 3 losses. Everything else was flat.

My theory, and I think it holds water, is while everyone else was playing and practicing, Miami had to do a full-stop due to Irma. 18 days zero practice, 21 days between games, kids scattered from Orlando to Miami.
Everyone was getting in mid-season form, while Miami was cleaning up yards, houses, etc.. Now after a consistent 4-5 games, starting with VT, been a different team. If you do the Math, that would put us
about mid-season right around the VT timeframe.

At least, that's my theory, and I hope it's true... :)

At any rate, we're still 1Y away from when we thought we'd start hard-charging, so we're gambling with house money and this is a freebie gift card, as far as I'm concerned.

Obviously reading comprehension is not your strong suit as the question was (6) game stretch like this?

Rephrasing er narrowing my own question ~ 2014 (3) game stretch: Wisky #11 / 'bama #1 / Oregon #3.

Thanks for taking it and making it personal.

To the former-yes, I think you could cut out different 6 game stretches in both '05 and '06....and probably last year with the wonderfully bad-weather night game stretch somewhere in the cut-out.

To the latter-sure, hard to beat a playoff run for toughness over 3 games.

We're playing our best football right now even with the recent fiasco at Iowa so there is that. The timing is good even if the recent play is not helpful. Just win your games......bye a lot!
We are making a "run" so lets keep killing it and let the whole thing play out.

Bill Livingston at the Plain Dealer has written some garbage in the past, but he did bring up some good point in an article he wrote today/yesterday:
  1. Ohio State already has an embarrassing home loss, again in the second game, on its record with a 31-16 defeat by Oklahoma to go with the 31-point rout on the plains.
  2. No team has ever made the CFP with worse than a 14-point loss, OSU's aforementioned Virginia Tech loss being the worst.
  3. No team has ever made the CFP with two losses, much less two such lopsided ones.
  4. Only one team has ever made the CFP without even winning a conference division title. Guess who? (I'll spot you the O-H!)
  5. No other conference is working on a two-year, two-game schneid in the CFP, as is the Big Ten after Alabama shut out Michigan State, 38-0, in 2015 and Clemson blanked Ohio State, 31-0, in 2016.

hmm, it appears Livingston may have seen my post ...

All the discussion so far aside and the committee saying previous years don't matter notwithstanding ~ 31-0 last year / 31-16, 55-24 may be the tipping point this year even if everything favors the Buckeyes the next (3) games. One could easily argue it wasn't the (2) losses that kept ped out last year, but getting blown out by TTUN 49-10.

2014: Fla State undefeated / 'bama lost by 6 to Ole Miss / Oregon lost by 7 to AZ / Buckeyes by 14 to VT
2015: Clemson undefeated / 'bama lost by 6 to Ole Miss / Sparty by 1 to NE / Oklahoma by 7 to TX
2016: 'bama undefeated / Clemson lost by 1 to Pitt / Washington by 13 to So Cal / Buckeyes by 3 to ped

So you see the worst loss by a final four team is Ohio State's 14 to VT. Just want to get you guys/girls prepared when the Buckeyes get left out even if everything seems to fall their way.

Bottom line a team that loses by 31 to Iowa really shouldn't be in the final four, let alone 15 to the Sooners. The same Iowa team that had 66 frickin' total yards against Wisky.

Total chaos, even if Ohio State doesnt make it.

Would love to see -

UGA lose to either GA Tech or Kentucky, then beat Bama in the SECCG

Oklahoma lose to WVU. Leaving a 2 loss Big 12 champ for sure.

Clemson lose to South Carolina and then beat Miami in the ACCCG (or Clemson just beating Miami even if they win out)

Someone besides a 2 loss USC win the Pac 12

Would make for one hell of a mess in that final selection room

It's only been 1 game, it was a good game but i'm still cautiously optimistic. MSU never really put the heat on them, hopefully is scUM/Wisconsin do the coaches don't panic like they did against Iowa.

Too many people on Twitter filling their heads with Buckeye CFP scenarios, some even suggesting the Bucks control their own destiny.

Two thoughts ~ Ironically, if by some miracle the Buckeyes make the final four they will have Iowa to thank for getting them out of their deep funk. :biggrin2:

And if a team like the 2017 Buckeyes does make the final (4) it would be an excellent argument for going back to a two team BCS format.

 I doubt you'll see many people clamoring for a return to the 2 teams for the title BCS format.

4 team playoff isn't perfect, but it at least opens things up a bit, especially in years where there are clearly not 2 teams that stand out above the crowd (this being one of them)
