When less than 4% of the teams playing the sport get to play in the tournament, as is the case in college football, every attempt should be made to apply objective criteria. Instead, all 4 spots are chosen subjectively.

The other sports you mention have between 10-20% of their teams participating in the tourney, but most of them get there by objective criteria. Only college basketball subjectively selects at-large teams, but only conference champions get automatic bids.

A committee doesn't go into a room and pick teams to participate in NBA, NFL, NHL, or MLB playoffs. The criteria by which teams qualify is objective, and everyone can see it.

Oh, I agree. My first sentence is in agreement that there shouldn’t be a team who isn’t a conference champion that plays for a NC. Since it was a possibility, of course I was thrilled OSU got that chance last year but it obviously doesn’t make sense. I don’t like the wildcard in the NFL. Let it be the four division winners in each conference. The Saints and Panthers should not have had to play. That was decided over a 16 game regular season including 2 head to heads. The Saints beat Carolina in Carolina and in New Orleans and won the South. What business does Carolina have even getting a shot at that point? I really only like the wildcard in baseball and part of that is because a fourth team has to come from somewhere to make it even, it is the most deserving out of 12 other teams, and it is a series instead of a one and done. The NBA is just a joke and the playoffs take like six months to complete. It should be like baseball with the 3 division winners and a wildcard.

It sure as isht should be. How TF can you be a national champion if you're not even division champion?
Eh I don't mind because sometimes fluke shit happens and you lose to the wrong team. On principle I have no problem with non-division teams getting in if their body of work is clearly superior to conference winners. The problem I have with Alabama getting in over several other teams is that their body of work was absolute crap and an SEC team already got in. OSU last year at least had 3 wins over Top 10 teams, two on the road, while losing in somewhat fluke fashion to another Top 10 team conference champion on the road. Like, okay I get OSU lost to Iowa by a million points. So why didn't Wisconsin get a shot?

My problem with non division champs is this, using this year as an example

Alabama basically got rewarded for losing their division, they were super beat up and instead of having to go play the next week against a top 4 Georgia team......they got to sit at home and rest up, meanwhile as well avoiding a possible loss in the SEC title game.

Then you have Wisconsin, who won their division and had to go put their top 4 ranking on the line in the B1G title game against #6 Ohio State........Wisconsin loses and then has the same # of loses as Bama......Bama is rewarded the #4 spot by virtue of sitting home due to failing to win their division. Where Wisconsin is sort of punished by winning their division and having to play an extra game against another top opponent.

Agreed, which is why I think you need to look at the entire body of work. Wisconsin arguably should have been in regardless unless they got beat 59-0 again.
