Game Thread 2017 B1G Championship Game: OSU vs. Wisconsin - 12/2/17 @ 8:00 ET (FOX)

I pointed out that FAU (who, by the way, UW faced and held to 14 points) is ranked around #15 nationally in total offense. News flash: total offense and total defense are commonly used as evidence of how good an offense or defense is.
May or may not be true depending on their opponents defensive strength ...

Indeed, if they put up 500 yards against Wisky/TTUN/Sparty/'bama ~ Wisky they had 248.

Please feel free to further discuss. :biggrin2:

JT is one tough motherfucker, but I cannot imagine him playing in this game very much. Meyer did say he'd play, but I think it'll be minimal.
Maybe like Jalin Marshall and Braxton in 2015 they'll switch JT to H-Back. IOW empty the offensive play book and throw caution to the wind! Rumor has it Buckeyes have the offensive talent to totally discombobulate most defenses.

If the team that played Sparty shows up ~ excellent! Iowa ~ not so much. That's why they play the game!

Going by S&P+, FAU's offensive overall is the eighth best in the country, but that number is buoyed by a rushing attack that ranks seventh in the nation while the passing attack is rated as only the 87th best.

For comparisons sake, OSU is fifth in overall offensive S&P+ rating and second in both rushing and passing S&P+.

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ncaaoff

The S&P+ Ratings are a college football ratings system derived from the play-by-play data of all 800+ of a season's FBS college football games (and 140,000+ plays). S&P+ ratings are based around the core concepts of the Five Factors: efficiency, explosiveness, field position, finishing drives, and turnovers.

Let me help you. cmstophe's original post suggested that UW had not faced a tough opponent. I pointed out that FAU (who, by the way, UW faced and held to 14 points) is ranked around #15 nationally in total offense. News flash: total offense and total defense are commonly used as evidence of how good an offense or defense is.
No shit, Sherlock. While those stats are indeed commonly used, they many times are misleading due to the opponents against whom those very stats are generated. You conveniently left out bm11's reply that FAU rolled up those stats against other teams on their schedule. But, I'll help you out...here are FAU's opponents and the points they scored against those opponents:

Navy: 19
Wisconsin: 14
Bethune-Cookman (FCS): 45
Buffalo: 31
Middle Tennessee: 38
Old Dominion: 58
North Texas: 69
Western Ky. 42
Marshall: 30
Louisiana Tech: 48
FIU: 52
Charlotte: 31

So, against teams that are not FCS and are not in the shittiest conference in all of FBS football, they managed 19 against a service academy and 31 (17 entering the 4th qtr) against a 6-6 MAC team, along with the 14 against Wisconsin. So the fact that Wisconsin "held" FAU to 14 points isn't a reflection of how good Wisconsin's defense is as much as it is a reflection of how mediocre FAU's offense is against anyone not in Conference USA. But, hey, feel free to believe that the Owls actually have the 16th best offense in FBS just because "the stats" tell you so.

Feels like half this thread is about PMS and the other half is about the color they painted the end zones. Wtf is with the pointless argument in the game thread? Will any of it make a bit of difference when OSU plays wisky? Nope. Hug it out, Buckeyes. The clit measuring contest is in the *ichigan forums...

Guys I'll be the tie breaker... FAU is an average offense overall.

Highly rated but only because they play poor competition

Back to the game though. I have a feeling that we see #7 trot out there for the first snap the closer we get to game time and now knowing JT had surgery on Sunday. I'm ok with that to be honest because as everyone and their mother has pointed out we simply run the QB way too much with JT in there.

We have a distinct speed advantage with our skill against their back 7 and simply getting the ball into that skills hands will really help us. That advantage is negated if we run a one legged JT at this Wisconsin front because even if JT had two healthy legs he's not a mismatch for anyone on this Wisconsin defense. JT is serviceable running the ball but he doesn't have the type of speed to run away from people like a Braxton and the way we are going to beat this Wisconsin team soundly is by taking advantage of our speed. Handoffs to JK and Weber, the quick passes out wide to Parris and KJ, motioning Parris to get him on a LB'r, getting the ball to Dixon underneath on crossers along with KJ and then going over top to Victor.

All I know is the passing game went from doing great heading into November to not being a strength at all. We've seen Dixon and Parris particularly disappear and I think mainly for a few reasons. First the weather has sucked as it always does this time of year but more importantly I think after that Iowa game it really shook JT's confidence (as evidence of the two picks vs MSU). However this is our kind of atmosphere playing indoors and on the turf so while we need to run the ball we need to get back to being serviceable throwing the ball too.

We need to make them pay when they bring that extra defender into the box, and I'd be pretty excited to see what Haskins can do if he's the one taking the snaps.
