2017-2018 Ohio State Men's Basketball (24-7, 15-3, #2 Seed in B1G Tourney)

I don't want to rag on Kyle Young, this is a serious question...what is he supposed to provide while he is out there? From when I have watched, it seems he doesn't score, rebound or play particularly good defense. I know he was highly ranked coming out of HS but I didn't see any film or read about his strengths/weaknesses. I don't know if he is just getting used to college ball or what. I would say the exact same thing on Dakich but I don't see that changing at all.

Overall, very disappointed on the Butler loss but it's one game and it will take awhile to make some strides with what CH was dealt with. I just want to see continued improvement throughout the year. As already mentioned, Butler is typically a very good team.

I think there is definitely an adjustment thing happening for Kyle. I wasn't expecting big things from him this season, especially playing behind both Tate and KBD, but let's hope he is ready to step up more next season.

In HS Kyle was a savvy, tough-minded basketball player who was strong and athletic enough to mix it up inside but could also hit the open outside shot. So far this season his shot has not fallen on his few attempts, not even close, and he looks a step slow on the court probably just in terms of adjusting to the college game, an adjustment that wasn't helped at all by him missing a couple weeks of practice with the tonsillectomy.

Ultimately, I don't know if Kyle will get enough PT this season to really carve his niche and get his game going, but with Tate gone (and possibly KBD) next season he will have more opportunity and hopefully this season and the off-season will help prepare him for a bigger role.

Dakich isn't in the same ball-park as Young. Young has the potential to be a do-it-all type of player. Get tough rebounds, score inside and out, make plays and pass to open guys, etc...Dakich is a borderline Division One basketball player who we can only hope will spell CJ Jackson for a few minutes without doing anything too ugly. Young is a legit 6-7 or more and is very athletic and smart. I think you are correct, however, in that he probably won't give you much on the defensive end. Not that he should be bad; his AAU and high school clips showed him willing to help out and get some steals and blocks.

In short, I wouldn't worry a bit about Young in the long-term, and I fully expected him to contribute some quality minutes this year. Once he's fully healthy and has one of those nice games to get over the hump, he'll be a solid contributor. I would hope to be able to play him over Andre Wesson, for certain.

I'll go ahead and give the knee jerk reaction:

I'm ready for a bit of a youth movement. Certain players have not shown improvement in areas I would expect. Their performance has definitely not improved from last year's dismal effort. If we're going to look this outclassed, give me Kyle Young, Jallow and the Wessons with major minutes.

LOL, that's pretty much all we have man. KBD is a flat out stud, but he's not Lebron. Can only do so much. On occasion JT has a great game but he is what he is. At this point the only real disappointment is Kam. He never really morphed into the scorer we thought we wer going to get. Not much you can say about the Freshmen/Red shirts, they are basically what they are.

It looks like CJ Jackson has so much potential at times but he turns the ball over way too much and falls asleep on the defensive side. It's frustrating.

Oh I definitely did mean to say they had the same ceiling or anything, just that both had been unremarkable when they were in. Dakich is tough to watch. I just hadn't seen hardly anything from Young and didn't know what his profile was coming in, but he had some nice moments tonight. Thank you for the scouting report though, as it was a serious question.

And another frustrating one tonight after another good start and a chance to beat a pretty decent team. But it is tough to get too upset, we have zero depth and not many guys who can contribute off the bench. We have to be wearing down as the game goes along and we only really have one "go to" guy in KBD. Tate can play but Jackson is streaky and turns the ball over, Kam has just disappointed and is not producing at all, Dakich provides next to nothing, and I have seen almost nothing from A. Wesson truth be told. That being said, I think there is definitely a ton of room for improvement as the season goes along but mostly, we need to take care of the damn ball and learn from freshmen experiences. I think C. Wesson, Young and Jallow can all turn into good players here and have shown flashes along the way.

Yeah, it's pretty much this. All of our scholarship players are in the rotation. Jallow and Kaleb are already starters and playing about as much as they can handle. You could argue Young should get a few more minutes than he has been, but Holtmann is still trying to win games. That said, Holtmann said in the post-game that he is going to evaluate what he can do to keep his best guys fresher at the end of games, and Young did flash a bit last night, so maybe he will get more minutes moving forward.

Really need Potter back healthy, he was contributing nicely before the injury. And we need guys like Andre and Kam to give us SOMETHING positive in their minutes to take some of the pressure off our starters.

I'm willing to give Holtmann some benefit of the doubt here. We can't blame Matta forever but it is possible that some of the older players are just engraved how they are and pretty much unfixable

Which is why I totally agree with

Wisconsin is probably licking their chops for tomorrow's game after that embarrassment they laid out against Virginia. Hopefully these guys can pull it together a bit and at least provide a competitive effort.
