2017-2018 B1G Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

mizzou, tenn and okl all shouldve dropped out by now honestly

Oklahoma has lost fucking 7 of their last 9 games. They are getting some kind of "they have the nations leading scorer" benefit of the doubt.

That includes losses 3 of the bottom 4 in the Big 12. Texas (15-11) Oklahoma State (15-10) and Iowa State (13-12)

They have seven rebounds at the half. SEVEN. Against michigan, year in and year out one of the softest teams in the conference.

They fucked up hiring that Gard dude. He's a terrible coach.

Where were you on Gard the last 2 years? They are struggling this year, but Gard had an amazing turnaround 2 years ago when Bo retired after a month and the team struggling. Ended up taking them to the S16 that year, then finished 2nd in the conference and went to the S16 again last year beating #1 seed Villanova. They lost a lot from last years team (4 of top 5), then the starting PG got hurt about 10 games in this year. I don't know that Gard is a great coach, but he was the head assistant for a lot of years for a B1G team that always overachieved their talent level and had 2 pretty good years his first 2 years as head coach, so I think the guy can probably coach. They have a pretty good frosh class this year, but lost their prize recruit for '18.

I tend to think that we are going to take a pretty sharp down turn next year after losing the conference player of the year and a few other seniors who have made significant contributions this year. Hopefully we have some patience with Holtmann next year.

The jury is still out on Gard. He gets a pass for this year after losing two rotation players to injury and having to start another with one functioning arm. Happ is pretty good, but there's not much beyond that in terms of talent. Next year will be the true bellwether.

Like others have said, he gets credit for taking over in a really tough situation two years ago and leading the team to the Sweet Sixteen, and repeating it last year. My biggest concern is recruiting, especially within the state of Wisconsin – Tyler Herro (#3 SG nationally) decommitted right before the season started and signed with Kentucky, which has pretty much left the staff scrambling to fill out the class.

The one coach in the conference who I have always thought it somewhat overrated is Painter. He has had pretty good talent over the past several years and has not done much with it. I think that he has exceptional talent this year and he just does not seem to use it correctly. With some of the dominant big men he has had over the years, not to mention the perimeter talent, he certainly has not done much with it. I would have loved to see Matta coach the talent that he has possessed over the years.

I think Painter has done a good job of developing guys, especially big men. Of their recent players, only Swanigan was really highly rated out of HS. Purdue doesn't really miss a beat on their big men, from Hammons to Haas to Haarms all contributing well early in their careers, and they've got a couple more fringe T100 frontcourt players coming in 2018 that will probably excel there, too. and guys like Vince Edwards and Dakota Matthias are better than I ever thought they'd be at the high major level. also, while he wasn't lowly ranked or anything (almost T100), Carsen Edwards as a soph is already playing for them like an All-B1G player.

with the way they develop guys who aren't necessarily the most talented and with Painter's methodical approach, I'd say Purdue has been one of the more consistent programs in the conference... BUT they definitely seem to have a bit of a middle-ceiling under Painter. I know their fanbase is getting kind of sick of constantly under-performing in the Dance.

I just reviewed MSU's schedule to see if they are ever going to play another tough road game ... nope.

They literally have road games against every single frickin lousy program in the bottom half of the B1G. Each of the bottom 8 teams in the conference standings all host(ed) MSU. Every. Single. One. In fact, their game at OSU in early January will be their only true road game vs a team with any chance at the tourney the entire season. 8 of the 9 teams they play on the road aren't even on the bubble, and only 1 (MD) has a good shot at the NIT even. In a year where there is a noticeable difference in quality among the top 6 and bottom 8, this is a huge advantage for MSU.

Considering they have 14 teams, it is a good thing the B1G is moving to a 20-game slate because a team should not be able to miss road games with 4 of the top 5 teams they could possibly face in conference play.
