Minnesota men’s basketball center Reggie Lynch faces a career-ending suspension and “complete ban” from campus until August 2020 for violating the school’s sexual misconduct policy in the spring of 2016, multiple media outlets reported Friday morning.
Both the StarTribune and the Twin Cities Pioneer Press are reporting the Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action (EOAA) office investigated a sexual assault claim that occurred in Lynch’s dorm room on April 28, 2016. After thoroughly looking into the matter, Lynch was reportedly found “responsible” for a sexual assault claim. The office notified the Lynch and the accuser that Lynch’s suspension will begin Jan. 9.
Lynch can request a hearing with the Student Sexual Misconduct Subcommittee (SSMS), the Star Tribune reported. In that case, the suspension would not begin on Jan. 9, and the next steps would depend on the decision of the SSMS.
This marks the second EOAA investigation Lynch has been a part of. In May, Lynch was arrested on suspicion that he sexually assaulted a 19-year-old woman. The charges were dropped in August, and Minnesota cleared him to play this season a month later.
Lynch has been a defensive force for the Golden Gophers since transferring from Illinois State, where he spent his first two seasons. After sitting out the 2015-16 campaign, Lynch earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league with 106 blocks.
As a redshirt senior this year, Lynch is averaging career highs in points (10.1), rebounds (8.0) and blocks (4.1).
Minnesota coach Richard Pitino is reportedly scheduled to meet with the media sometime Friday morning.
