OHIO STATE FALL CAMP POSITION BATTLES, RANKED

Heading into fall camp one year ago, Ohio State was preparing for the position battle of all position battles. J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones were set to go head-to-head for the starting quarterback spot on a team attempting to defend a national championship.

Things are a little bit different this time around; it seems like quarterback is the only position shored up for the Buckeyes.

Of course, there are actually spots other than quarterback where starters are solidified, but the fact Barrett seems like one of the team's only sure things speaks to the amount of roster turnover for Ohio State in 2016. That turnover, however, is a big reason why this upcoming camp may be the most interesting during Urban Meyer's tenure in Columbus. There's playing time available all over the field when The Buckeyes open fall camp Aug. 7 and it's certainly going to be a time when not-so-well-known players earn opportunities to become major contributors in the fall.

5. RIGHT TACKLE
Urban Meyer was close to naming Isaiah Prince as the starter here during spring practice, but, in Meyer's mind, Prince hadn't done quite enough yet to earn that nod. It was partially due to performance, but Meyer almost surely also had Malcolm Pridgeon, a junior college transfer who signed with the Buckeyes in February, in his mind.

Meyer stated back then Ohio State doesn't sign junior college players to sit, and that the Buckeyes fully expect Pridgeon to compete for that right tackle spot. Prince seems to have a significant leg up in the competition, but it's still open for now.

4. SAFETY
With Vonn Bell and Tyvis Powell both now on NFL rosters, Ohio State had a pair of openings in the back end of its defense for 2016. Redshirt sophomore Malik Hooker all but solidified one of those spots in spring practice, but the other safety position is still up for grabs.

A converted corner, Damon Webb started the majority of spring ball at safety. Position coach Greg Schiano said the plan was for Webb to remain at that spot, and he's the favorite to win it going into camp, but he will be pushed by Cam Burrows and Erick Smith — who are both coming off season-ending injuries — for the starting job.

Think I'm most intrigued by the WR group. It's a little strange/ disappointing how little the receivers that Urban has recruited and brought in have contributed. The only one who has really done anything is Jalin Marshall and he obviously wasn't a star by any means.

I'd be tempted to say WR will be the most contested position group but you can honestly say that about several. I expect there to be some fierce competition this camp across the board. And Urbs has to absolutely love that. Most groups other than RB have a pretty good mix of older and younger guys too which makes it interesting.

Who wants some?

If I had to pick my favorite to watch how it plays out, it'd be CB. Lattimore vs. Ward is going to be very fun to watch but either way both are going to see the field plenty. I'm going to say Ward pulls off the upset on this one.

PRESSER BULLETS: URBAN MEYER TALKS AT BIG TEN MEDIA DAYS

  • "We have to find a way to replace arguably one of the best groups in the history of college football."
  • "We have to get this team ready ... our practices are going to be much different. It'll be interesting, but I'm very excited to be around them.
  • How his team reacts to the big stage and playing in front of a huge crowd is "what is keeping me up a little bit."
  • Meyer can't recall a time in his career to have this many young, talented players to work with and that need to key on for 2016.
  • Heading into camp, Meyer thinks his team is as talented a group as he's had at Ohio State: "Now, the question is can we get them ready?"
  • Meyer feels like all the talent "just had to wait its turn" last year behind an old and strong team: "The chains come off soon and we'll see what we've got."

URBAN MEYER SAYS OHIO STATE'S UPCOMING FALL CAMP IS 'PROBABLY THE MOST CRITICAL COACHING MONTH THAT I'VE EVER BEEN THROUGH'

72488_h.jpg,qitok=fcXlDZMO.pagespeed.ce.74tYgS_Mqr.jpg

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer wasted no time. He got right to the point in his opening statement Tuesday morning at Big Ten Media Days.

“I’ve been answering a lot of questions about a young team, but the issue would be if it was a non-talented young team,” Meyer said. “That’s not the case at all. It’s a very young team, but talented.

“But this is probably the most critical coaching month that our staff will — I’m speaking for myself — that I’ve ever been through.”

Meyer certainly wasn’t lying.

The Buckeyes are young — he was also quick to point out Ohio State’s 44 scholarship players who have freshman eligibility — but expectations are still sky high. In a recent poll done by media members covering the Big Ten, the Buckeyes were tabbed as the favorites to win the league. If you’re into betting and Las Vegas odds, Ohio State is the co-favorite there with Michigan to take home a Big Ten title.

The Buckeyes’ lack of experience certainly doesn’t seem to be factoring into much of anything at this point, but Meyer’s players can’t gain that experience without simply just playing games. It’s for that specific reason he said Ohio State’s upcoming fall camp is so critical.

“If we’re going to get to where the expectation of Ohio State is, if we’re going to get there, we’ve got a lot of work to do,” fifth-year senior center Pat Elflein said. “I’m not worried by any means, but like every year when we go to camp, we’ve got a lot of work to do. I feel a lot of pressure on me and J.T. [Barrett] as well because we’re in charge.

“It’s going to be fun, though. It’s going to be a good time.”

FIVE TAKEAWAYS FROM OHIO STATE HEAD COACH URBAN MEYER'S BREAKOUT INTERVIEW SESSION AT BIG TEN MEDIA DAYS

On the injury front, everybody seems to be full-go according to Meyer. Noah Brown, Nick Bosa, Tyquan Lewis, Erick Smith, Corey Smith, Nick Conner, Justin Hilliard and Marshon Lattimore were all players Meyer was specifically asked about and he said all are ready to go.
