2016-2017 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

I think there are a couple of problems for the Buckeyes when it comes to rebounding. One, they are not a very physical team and aside from Tate they shy away from contact. Secondly, they are not a very aggressive team and don't crash the boards. Matta teams have never rebounded well unlike Izzo teams where it is a point of emphasis. They wear football helmets during the rebounding practice. I really don't think they know how to box out either because they suck at it.

I guess I don't get your thinking on free throws and practice. We had all sorts of drills for free throws especially at the end of practice when the team is tired. My teams were good free throw shooters because we practiced it, drilled it, and emphasized it. Shooters can improve and become better in all sorts of shots with practice, 3 pointers for example. Learning a rhythm is important.

Attitude also plays a large role in both aspects of the game. All of it is manageable and can be improved.
All I am saying is that if you have played basketball since elementary school and still cannot shoot free throws you must be a head case. I just do not know what to tell you. I am sure that they practice shooting free throws even more in college but if you do not have it you do not have it. Basic fact. Coaching shooting free throws can only go so far in helping a guy..

Regarding rebounding. I do not care what they do at Michigan State. They better get those helmets off or they might be called for targeting. I think that rebounding is almost pure desire and some coaches do not want many guys going to the boards because they might get caught shorthanded at the other end of the court. However, I will agree that Matta's teams have been really good rebounders except if you go back to the Lighty, Sullinger, etc. days

I don't know what to say if you think coaching and practice can't help someone become a better player....look what Belichick does with other teams cast offs in the pros....

The point was Izzo and Michigan State are consistently one of the best rebounding teams in the country. Whereas Matta teams are well, not. It is a point of emphasis and how you earn your way to playing time. It does take effort and the drill develops/enforces toughness and mental attitude.

However, I will agree that Matta's teams have been really good rebounders except if you go back to the Lighty, Sullinger, etc. days

Well I guess there is something we can agree on.....

Blocking out (without fouling) is certainly a teachable skill. Heck, simply telling TT that he needs to hold his blockout until the ball hits the rim would have gotten us a few extra possessions on foul shots this year. Offensive rebounding is mostly about desire and athleticism.

I agree coaching can't make a 50% FT shooter an 80% FT shooter. A good shooting coach can improve it somewhat though. Lyle is mostly mental, his technique is fine. Same for Wesson and Potter. TT, though his percentage isn't bad, it sometimes falters under pressure and its because he doesn't keep his hand under the ball and releases off the wrong fingers creating side spin and a shot that gets off center. CJ has a similar problem. Tates form is actually pretty good, but I think he's too square at the setup.

Is this the longest run of bad luck Basketball for a Thad Matta coached team or is it that we just cannot land the top notch recruits like we use to. What seems to be the problem.

Considering that they just got ran off the court by a bad Iowa team without their best player.....I'd say it's just BAD

I really don't. He has been a great coach and fought the good battle against some alarming physical challenges. He has taken Ohio State to a level that it was half a century ago. But, quite frankly, his time has come.

This man earns three times what the President of the University earns. He earns more than Urban Meyer. He has been spiraling downward for some time now. The right thing to do would be to preserve his legacy by getting out now.

Even with a new coach, I think it would take two seasons to get back on track.

So it might be up to the administration as to whether to go with a new coach and wait two seasons or keep Thad and wait two seasons. I don't see much difference next season, unless Thad 'jettisons' a couple more players to continue to try to change the locker room.

I do feel that new assistants and definitely a new strength coach seem to be in order. The strength seems to be lacking.

He earned more than Urban Meyer for one season because of something odd in his contract but he doesn't typically earn more than Meyer
