2015 Sugar Bowl Less Civilized Thread (Arguments/Shenanigans)

Just interested: How would you rate coaching staffs from HC to Special teams?
HC- Saban. He's 2-1 against Meyer and has more national championships.

Bama OC vs OSU DC- Bama. I need to see the bullets be consistent and right now while they played amazing vs Wisconsin id like to see that type of performance again or at least play sound for a few more whole games.

Bama DC vs OSU OC- very close but ill go with a very slight osu edge. Tom Herman has been helping break records and he's one of the biggest assistants out there. His performance has been outstanding and although I love Kirby Smart I think Tom Herman has faced and beat someone just as good in Narduzzi.

Bama ST vs OSU ST- OSU. Urban frequently is involved more so here than most head coaches. We purposely kick short because teams rarely get back to the 25. However, we haven't seen many blocked punts like in the past and our kickoff return has been sorta mediocre.

I will say its a draw if Saban is also as involved as Meyer. I don't care what Bama fans say though I feel our Punter is just such a weapon moreso than their Ray Guy candidate.

Thanks and Great analysis! I would pretty much agree. I do like what Warriner and Drayton bring to the Offense and what Larry Johnson brings to our Defense. I think these guys are some of the best in CFB with what they do.

I think osu has the better overall staff. I like warriner, drayton, and johnson like you said. Coordinator wise bama is probably overall better but the position coaches I like osu more

I've got to disagree on ST. I don't think our ST have been anything special this year, asides from Cam Johnston.

We have holes in kickoff and punt coverage in particular, and I hold my breath every time we field a punt since the Minnesota debacle.

I've also got to give the overall coaching edge to Bama. I feel like it's very premature to say we have better coaches considering Saban and Smart have won 3 national titles, and we have still to win a bowl game as a staff. But yes, based on potential we might be up there.

Doesn't OSU lead the nation in net yards per kickoff and punt? (as in least yards gained by opposing teams)

Ew.

Your opinion stinks. :biggrin2:

Kickoff and punt COVERAGE have been very solid. MUUUUCH better than last year, and significantly better than a lot of the country. While I agree that the return game has been sketchy, it's also an improvement over the unit that ultimately cost us a bowl win.

When it comes to coaching you have to look at what a coaching staff does with their talent. Saban/Smart/Kiffin/etc. are professionals, but I don't see the kind of growth and progression with their men that you see from the staffs that pride themselves on GROWING their talent. This year's team has talent out the ass and they have played as such. Not dominating as one might expect, but like a team with a bevy of 5* guys. Maybe it's a matter of seeing the team from an outside perspective, but as far as coaching goes these guys are all about scheme and recruiting. Nothing more.

Meyer/Herman/Fickell-Ash have taken a program with so much raw potential and utilized it to it's limits and then some. Not only have they built a functional scheme on both sides of the ball, but they have recruited to it and this year is proof of concept. This is a team that's very talented but very young and this coaching staff has gotten more than anyone could've expected out of them during this year's run. Talking scheme, it's a wash. The best in the business are calling the shots on either side, easy to call a draw in that regard. However, I think our squad has done the more noteworthy job of actually coaching... and I really think that counts for something.

Fair enough. I hope you're right!

Agree with most. At least for kickoff, our coverage has been phenomenal. Unfortunately, our weekly kickoff out of bounds may be affecting your memory. And in a game like this, that could be huge.
If Clinton can duplicate last week's effort (9/10 kickoffs in bounds and Bama having to start inside their 20 several times) I'll be very pleased with the ST play.

Bama is top heavy with their coaches. They have overall better head coach through their coordinators but overall top to bottom ill have people like warriner, johnson, and drayton all day.

As for the special teams.. we see different things on special teams then. We are one of the bestat coverage units and while our return game is medicore so is bama's. Both punters are great, and both place kickers. Overall our teams are a very close comparison of each other. I like bama's depth better but I like our system and style better which can help negate depth
