Pretty good photoshop job to make it look like he's wearing a headset.

Living in a small town as I do, there are times I can't avoid shopping at WalMart, since it's really the only thing close. Just got home from there, and when I was walking towards the automotive section, I saw this, stuck in the back of the store, in a clearance aisle. Even the Walmart Wolverines won't buy this crap!!

I wonder how much they cost after their employee discount.

Still more expensive than actually going to a game.

And this, in a nutshell, is why those who decry Gene Smith as inept are so full of [Mark May].

The bottom line is why Gene is paid the big bucks, and he delivers. Unlike Brandon.

What exactly has Gene Smith delivered? He didn't hire Tressel or Matta. Urban Meyer landed in his lap. I suppose he may have delivered our undefeated season by not voluntarily taking a bowl ban in 2011.

WKMG-TV in Orlando is reporting that a rift between Meyer and OSU athletic director Gene Smith is delaying the hire. Meyer sought to have Smith removed from his position as a condition for accepting the job, sources tell the television station. Smith has been AD at the school since 2005.

University president E. Gordon Gee, however, stood behind Smith and refused to dismiss him, according to the station's report, which cites a source close to the situation.

Not defending everything Gene has done, he at least had enough sense to do one thing Brandon hasn't yet: Listen to the fans.

When people flipped about the ridiculous attempt at selling $20 spring game tickets, he dropped the price.

Tho one thing I feel is being overlooked is concerning. They're trying to turn The 'Shoe into an above ground Big House by connecting the south end to the rest of the stadium.

Was that Gene Smith "listening to the fans" or was that Gene Smith doing exactly what he was told by others (in this case Urban Meyer because it would be embarrassing and bad in numerous ways to have a poorly attended Spring Game).

More than a few people in the know have speculated that doing whatever other people tell him at all times is the number one quality that keeps Smith hanging around as AD.

I submit as evidence the fact that the number of night games have quadrupled in recent years. Was that Gene Smith or was that Gene Smith doing what Urban Meyer told him to do (in addition to network decisions and blah blah).

To be honest, it makes no difference to me so long as the end result is the same.
He should be fired on principle and replaced with another figurehead that didn't totally fuck the athletic department with their mishandling of tatgat the one time they did try to do something on their own because they had "connections" with the NCAA or whatever dumbass reason Smith thought he knew what he was doing in that situation. I think we should have another press conference about it, in fact.

And to tie things back into this thread, we need to proactively prevent traveling the same road Michigan has gone down (winning football games really, really helps in that department but ticket prices continue to go up every single year and even with success the tipping point will be reached eventually). It would be nice to have someone at AD who could do that on their own without being told what to do by others.

You guys utterly miss the point. Gene Smith is charged with maximizing revenue, not with pleasing the fans. For that reason he has better job security than any other AD in the country.

As for Brandon? When you throw in Michigan game tickets for the Happy Meal in lieu of a bag of chips, you have big-time problems from both a fan perspective and a business perspective.
