2014 TSUN Shenanigans and Arguments

this should make the scum boards fun...

Jim Harbaugh: According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, Jim Harbaugh is not interested in the Michigan opening, and La Canfora believes the Oakland Raiders are most likely to acquire Harbaugh in a trade, along with the Miami Dolphins or New York Jets. In addition, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says Michigan reached out to Harbaugh, but U-M is convinced he wants to stay in the NFL.

^ On a similar note, I'm now fairly convinced Brad Pitt is not reciprocating my interest in him.

(Given his incessant lack of response to my ten-thousand returned-unopened letters.)

Well, that, and the restraining order. :(

I have the same situation with Jessica Alba

We will get what we want eventually. Just wait. You'll see.

Make you a deal. I'll take care of Angie, and you can get Brad on the rebound.

Tom still hasn't posted, and Sam in his never-ending spin, is laughably pretending that there was no power play here. The truth is that he took over last year and thus can claim that, while doing what Sam always does, only telling the part that fits his agenda. The problem is this isn't about recruits or coaches, so his subscribers aren't buying his drivel.

And to clarify, Sam gives Marcus Ray a regular column to spew his rambling, factionistic poison. Also, most of these posters are well respected members of the site, not random folks jumping off the ledge.

Policy on coaching search reporting
Saturday evening I made a short post about how we’ll handle reporting on the coaching search on this site moving forward. Some of the wild conclusions drawn by posters here were so outlandish that I felt it necessary to address it further.

Moving forward allcoaching search reportingby staff members of this site will be presented by me, or will at the very least go through me first. What that means is before we come to the board with a news item or even a rumor onthis singular topic, that content will be scrubbed first. We’ll compare it against each other’s info first, and where necessary we will check it further with other sources. That means that some things we hear may not make it to the board, but that’s the price of being as clear and as accurate as possibleon this topic.

I’m doing this in response to numerous complaints recently about inconsistencies in the reporting here. Some of those complaints were meritless because they referred to content that wasn’t at all contradictory. An example of such a complaint occurred Saturday when Tom Beaver made a post about how things between Michigan and Jim Harbaugh were progressing towards consummation (not his words verbatim… that’s a paraphrase on my part). Meanwhile, after Harbaugh corresponded directly with one of my sources earlier Saturday and indicated he hadn’t made up his mind yet on whether he would stay in the pros or go back to Michigan, and how his focus was on the job at hand… I posted that. Now those two statements aren’t at all contradictory, but when posted separately they could be interpreted as such. And they were. By many.

Had that information been presented together those misinterpretations could have been avoided. Changing how we handle reportingof this topicwill keep that from happening in the future. It will also allow us to steer clear of instances where contradictory information reallyisposted. And unfortunately we’ve had that happen a few times too many lately. An example of running smack dab into that issue occurred earlier this week.

I received a number of complaints about the site in the aftermath of rampant rumors that a 10 year 80 million dollar offer (or one similarly exorbitant) had been extended to Harbaugh. On this site we had posts that both lent credence to the possibility and that outright refuted it. Readers were appropriately critical of that, and it’s that type of disconnect that is the most damaging. Those are the types of errors that we simply have to avoid. And we will. We will do that by refining reportingon this topicin the ways that I outlined above.

I felt it necessary to keep you the reader informed about the decision. It seemed to me that many of you would wonder why you were seeing fewer rumor type postson this topicfrom Tom, or coaching search reports that were an aggregate of information gathered by the staff here and presented by me. To make that change with no explanation would just lead to too many false conclusions. Turns out being forthright did the same thing... at least with some of you.

In retrospect it was a mistake on my part not to be as thorough then as I’m being now. But the decision itself was NOT a mistake. On this storyI feel it’s crucial that reporting be as aligned as possible. There are more eyes on this site right now than ever before. It’s better to be second and right than first and wrong. And it certainly will reflect poorly on us if we wind up consistently on different pageson this topic.

I hope you all find that explanation satisfactory. I hope the absurdities I saw on this board last night about the motives behind this have been put to bed. Absurdities like

  • The athletic department saw posts suggesting things were close to being done with Harbaugh and demanded that Tom be silenced because the secret dealings would be compromised.
    • No such thing happened. Period!
  • A power play is being executed to remove Tom from the site
    • If a power play to remove Tom from the site were going to happen it would have been done when I took the site over in May of 2013. In the time since then nothing even remotely resembling a "power play" has taken place. If it had there wouldn't be so many people here with no clue as to the site hierarchy. I've never lorded over anyone around here, never been on a power trip, never acted like amegalomaniac.... and I'm not doing that now.
  • Tom has been removed from the site
    • That was never stated or even hinted at.
  • Tom is being censored
    • No. His opinions on the search are fair game. His reports and rumorson this topicwill still show up when he provides them and they’re checked.
To those of you that disagree with this, I’m sorry you feel that way. If this decision somehow makes the site less valuable to you then I’m sorry about that too. On other topics and stories we will remain more lax in our process, but for this story we’re going to have a greater filter.

I’m going to leave this topic open for most of the morning so people can make their opinions heard. After that I’ll lock it and we’ll move on. I ask that you not belabor the point beyond that because it will serve no purpose other than to make things unnecessarily contentious. If you find this policy to be too restrictive for you to continue your patronage without belaboring the point contentiously, I thank you for supporting the site to this point and hope that you’ll find reason to return sometime in the future.

I knew
Everyone would fall back in line by the morning. I am done and it's not because how Tom and Sam report, it's because if anything is said counter to some they are attacked mercilessly even when they are correct. Plus how this site handled last night was disgraceful.

Here are 3 examples that a frankly make me question how good some sources really are.

1). Morris-gate. I was personally scolded because I dare contrast reporting. In boxed certain people where they basically said if what I was saying was true Hoke was lying. By the time I was proven right they were already spinning it.

2). People like OMC were dead nuts on Brandon and yet he was attacked because it didn't fit the narrative. I was able to communicate to the day when Brandon was going to be fired weeks in advance (which I can prove in inboxes) and was constantly told I didn't know what i was talking about by certain mods.

3). The last search, there was no search, I can again prove in inboxes in November of 2010 Hoke was the guy, yet I sat back and watched misinformation communicated.

The first snide remark I will get is why do I pay money for their info? The answer is I don't, I come for the interactions with some, now if some don't like those they are deleted so I am done. This site can post Marcus Ray, celebrate guys like Cys who flat out lies for a narrative, and funnel info to fit a narrative but I am not going to contribute to it.

But this isn't journalism. This is information control. I understood perfectly what Sam was doing the first time he announced it and I didn't need another explanation.

But explain this, Sam-defenders, if you decide that we're still not getting it (peons that we are), why so many deleted threads last night, including mine, that were critical but weren't "wild" speculation? Why did this move necessitate Tom's removal as a moderator?

How do you "vet" information from sources that have reliably provided information over the years by checking it against people who have their own agenda? Why give folks veto authority over stories that didn't come from them? If you're going to give them that kind of authority, you might as well put them on the masthead. Using that method, we would have never found out about the business report given to Schlissel that has driven this process all along. Tom brought that to GBW and the poster that gave it to him is on the record supporting Tom. Absolutely nothing reported since has been more important.

You can spin it anyway you want but Sam just publicly and professionally humiliated the guy who built this place into what it was.

A lot of us have invested more than money in GBW. This site is valuable for a lot of reasons. Not the least of which is the voluntary contributions of board members, some of it directly to other members, some fed to Tom for his posts. There might be stinkers posted from time to time but nothing that stinks as much as this.

And to think, Marcus Ray still gets to spew his nonsense. Wow.

Here is the problem, this isn't a newspaper, the whole premise of the site is rumors......I will just come out and say it, quite a few people aren't here for Sam, you can get everything he posts on twitter or his show. Hell he broke the Hoke firing on Twitter 5 minutes before posting here......You know the site he runs and we pay for? Many followed Tom and that is why they are here.

I don't even know what Josh and Kyle do and that is not a slam on them because frankly I don't pay attention. In regards to Sam if its just about what he brings we would be paying for what he already says on the radio...What kind of suckers are we?

As I have said, I pay for the interactions with people and now those are controled.

You can like what you want, that is not the point. My point is for 3 months everything that doesn't fit a narrative is dismissed in a mocking fashion. The problem is that narrative is 0-3 to this point, it is staying right in the middle so that no matter what happens they can't be wrong.

More from the angry mob
thephirm wrote:Sam,

I've been a member for 11 years (though never much of a poster) and I've never once criticized the editorial team here prior to last night. After your latest post I feel compelled to do so again.

Your insistence that, "...all coaching search reporting by staff members of this site will be presented by me, or will at the very least go through me first," amounts to censorship whether you want to admit it or not. You are not going to allow Tom to present information unless it goes through you first for approval. How is that not censoring?
In my opinion you're behaving a lot like the previous athletic department regime at Michigan: treating your customers poorly, and refusing to reconsider unpopular decisions. Well, just as with the University I'm going to have to speak with my wallet, because that's the only thing people actually listen to.

On Monday morning I will be calling to cancel my subscription, and when I do so I will explain that it is because of this editorial decision. I hope that anyone else who feels as I do does the same.
I don't like Tom being censored - he is one of the biggest reasons I've stayed on the board since 2007.

Sam, I think in retrospect, it would have been a good idea to just work with Tom behind the scenes without bringing it out to the entire board. The end result could have been the same, but without all the board coming down so hard on you.
One more thing. Sam, you say that this was all precipitated by member complaints about bad information. I have a hard time believing this given that nothing has been the subject of more complaints over the past several months than Marcus Ray, and it appears his view is still being pushed by you day after day. It's one thing to have an opinion or two that don't jibe with the masses. It's another thing entirely when every word out of your mouth is just plain wrong and when you spew inconsistent statements around like candy. E.g. The spread stinks/is basketball on grass/won't work in the cold -vs- Butch Jones should be our next coach.

And this BS isn't here on the message board where it belongs, but in "news" stories on the front page and in a half-hour weekly book advertisement . . . I mean news segment . . . on WTKA.

If you are really concerned with members complaints and journalistic integrity, start by yanking this walking, talking cartoon off of these pages. The fact that Tom appears to be gone and Ray is, I guess, still here makes my head explode.

Well if Toms gone so am I.this whole thing is bush and should've been handled in private. If Marcus and Jaime are the future and Tom is the past I guess my membership is in the past too.
I'm surprised on how anyone that's been on here for any length of time doesn't think this is crap. I personally believe Tom was already being censored somewhat in the past year or two but this goes too far IMO.
4ti2de wrote:Some of the fun was taken out of this site last night.

I like the way Tom keeps it light and presents himself. I like the way Sam keeps it serious and presents himself. It's a good blend.

The Detroit News will eventually report who the new coach is. So, I can get the hard news from a variety of sources. It might be an hour later than this site, but what does that really matter?

The reason I come here is because I find it entertaining. Not just the way Tom and Sam present, but then the sum of the whole that follows. It would be a big mistake to take away the fun. Don't start looking at yourselves as a news source first and foremost. It's the entertainment value of this site that makes it successful.

A noticeable shift over on gbw today. Webb has been in full-on "sunshine pumping" mode with regard to Hairball for a few weeks now. Today, you're beginning to see him discuss other candidates, with a "Schiano vs. Addazio" thread even pinned. He's not coming out and saying it, but it looks like he's gently trying to shift the narrative away from Harbaugh as more and more news comes out from more and more sources that Hairball isn't interested.

So in a little over a weeks time those cum garrglers have;

  • lost The Game for the 12th time in the past 14 years
  • had the same loss to OSU keep them from a Bowl game
  • lost to The New Jersey Institute of goddamn Technology.....at home
  • started the search for coach #4 in the past 7 years by being teased into thinking the great Harbaugh homecoming gang bang dream was going to come true
  • Watched OSU win the B1G CG
  • watched OSU get into the inaugural CFB playoffs
  • and now get to close this weekend out by waking from the Harbaugh dream and debating "Schiano vs Addazio" in the cold, harsh light of reality

have I missed anything?
