2014 NCAA Basketball Tournament (official thread)

Ohio State was one stop away from beating Dayton, and beat Wisconsin at Madison. Tonight, Dayton and Wisconsin are cruising to the Elite Eight.

Just goes to show it's a fine line between a tourney run and an early exit.

That's why I think the tournament is a horrible crowner of the champ. But that's the subject for another thread...

Dayton is a prime example that good players of any size that trump average players of elite size/strength/pedigree.

Dayton is a good basketball team. They'll give Florida/fUCLA a good game in the Elite 8.

Not sure why anyone thought I was questioning Dayton's legitimacy.

I'm glad they're alive because I have no love for UCLA or Florida. Go Flyers!

Nah. Conference pride is still stupid.
Here we go again. If conference means nothing, why not have the Buckeyes join the Mac? Think of all the upsides - 99.5% win rate, undefeated seasons out the wazoo, play half your schedule in state, create the BTN - Buckeye Television Network - play one away game each season: Kent State in Cleveland, Miami at Paul Brown Stadium.

Better still, reform the Big East, take Rutgers and Maryland along and own the upper east coast market. Muck Fichigan? Why bother? You never have to see maize and blue again, never have to listen to The Victors. UConn can be the new rival game. Suck it Harvard - Yale. Bring on the automatic bowl bids and damned be those who bring up SOS!

I don't think BuckeyeNation was saying conference strength or relevance doesn't matter - because it certainly does.

The intent seemed to be all this "Big Ten! Big Ten!" or "SEC! SEC! SEC!" talk is pointless. I'm not going to root for a Big Ten team to win just because they're from the same conference. We root for a school, not a conference.

It's more than that. If you go back through the football and bowl season posts, you'll find that this comes up slightly more often than uniform atrocity discussions. There's a segment of the population on this site who sincerely believe that the conference means nothing. Period. That OSU need only win to get a solid BCS bid and that SOS will take care of itself even if the rest of the conference sucks.

I disagree with that. I may fault SEC fans for their over-the-top exuberance, but I understand it. It's pride in their own team and the schools that make up the conference. It's also a part of Old South culture, no small part of which has its roots in the Civil War and Reconstruction. My personal opinion is that the Big 10 and the North could benefit from some of that same sense of pride and history.

I sure don't root for ANY SEC team playing ANY Big Ten Team in ANYTHING.

I will root for ANY team, North, South, East or West playing Notre Dame, even USC and Alabama. Well, maybe not Miami or Florida State.

Yeah.....or even better. We could form the Ridiculous Hyperbole Conference and use extreme examples that don't really relate to the point! I think you're on to something here.

Clearly the major conferences are different than the smaller ones. Wichitaw St goes undefeated and everybody knows they'll be the first 1 seed to drop out. I'm not talking about B1G vs MAC. I'm talking about being a Tennessee fan and chanting S-E-C! S-E-C! S-E-C! when Alabama wins a national championship in football. Tennessee did jack shit for Alabama, but the douchebag SEC fans needed something to make themselves feel better while their actual favorite teams go 5-7.

And I'm not saying that this conference solidarity bullshit hasn't worked out for the idiots down south. Obviously it has. That doesn't make it any less stupid. I now have to root for Northwestern to beat Vandy or I'll have to hear about how Ohio State sucks. Because that logic makes total sense somehow in today's CFB.
