2014 FIFA World Cup - Brazil

FWIW, today's injury report:

Despite breaking his nose on Thursday during a collision with teammate Alejandro Bedoya in the second half of Germany's 1-0 victory in Group G, U.S. midfielder Jermaine Jones will be OK to play and could be joined by striker Jozy Altidore, who is nearing recovery for an ailing hamstring.

"Jermaine Jones does have a broken nose," U.S. Soccer spokesman Michael Kammarman said on Friday after the team trained in Sao Paulo. "He will not wear a mask for Tuesday's game [against Belgium]. He looks unaffected -- you can't even see any discolorations. It appears to be a minor fracture. He's fine, he's available to play."

Kammarman said both players were tested for concussion symptoms on the field, after the game, on Thursday night and again on Friday morning. There was no indication either player had suffered a concussion, according to Kammarman.

Altidore was running at training on Friday for the third straight day and continues to improve.

"We are very optimistic," Klinsmann said when asked whether Altidore might be ready to play Tuesday against Belgium. "Every day is a big step forward for Jozy. "It's 11 days now [since he got injured] and it's looking better every day, so we're optimistic to have him being part of the Belgium game."

Interesting article (23 Apr 13):

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF SUÁREZ

Luis Suárez is an enigma. He is an extremely passionate, emotional player who completely immerses himself in the game and, by his own admission, is committed to winning at all costs - even if it means breaking the rules. He has attributed his determination to win to the struggles he faced in becoming a professional footballer. From what we know, he certainly experienced the difficulty of his parents splitting-up when he was only nine years old.

On a football pitch Suárez can appear not to know the difference between right and wrong. At times he seems to lack boundaries. His misdemeanours on the pitch can be summarised as offensive verbal outbursts (e.g. the Evra incident), physically aggressive behaviour including two episodes of biting and one of punching, and repeated attempts to gain an advantage (e.g. against Ghana, Stoke and Mansfield) by handling the ball, diving or feigning being fouled or injured.

Luis Suarez: Needless to say the guy still has mental problems; he lies, cheats, bites, and is overly abusive (only) when on the soccer field.

Brasil v Columbia in the Final 8? Yes, please.

To start, I am a new observer to this game, but am growing to thoroughly enjoy this tournament. From what I've seen so far, Columbia is the most fun team to watch, and James Rodriguez the most exciting player. After today, I believe its time for the home team to go home, and for Columbia to move on to the semi's.

Peace, and as always:

GO USA!!!!!!!!!

I agree.

I loved the Chile team. Great passers, just could not muster a winner today, but a delight to watch throughout the games. Columbia brings some excitement too. As much as Brazil holds a special place in my heart after visiting and meeting the locals, I wouldn't mind seeing them bounced. It should be a great match.

Also, one of my favorite things to track is the Statistics page on FIFA.com (http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/statistics/index.html )- technology has come a long way the last couple World Cups and it's always interesting to track the passes completed, shots, and distance covered by certain players. Individual player pages track their positional heat maps as well.

Through 3 games, Michael Bradley has covered the most distance of any American-38km (23.6 miles) in three 90 minute matches. So while his touch and passing have not been there, his work rate in the midfield has been outstanding. Maybe it's not the most glamorous role that Klinsmann has MB in, but it has allowed Jermaine Jones to flourish. Either way, I'm hopeful he can find his form and settle into what the US really needs from him in the attack.
