2014 FIFA World Cup - Brazil

Fun day today. God bless Cristiano Ronaldo, he is a great American.

Jermaine Jones has been a beast this entire tournament. Bradley has been crap. Never would have thought I'd see the US advance with little contribution from him. I was very impressed with Omar Gonzalez today. Brad Davis was a passenger.

I like this teams chances against Belgium. These aren't the same teams that met each other in Cleveland last year. Belgium hasn't been as good in 2014 as they were in 2013. As Buckeye513 mentioned, defending Hazard and Mertens will be key. I think Fabian Johnson has held his own so far, but this game will present a different challenge for him. Beasley is a weak link and needs help. Brad Davis wasn't able to give him any today. I wonder what Klinsmann is going to do on the left and right wings. Jermaine Jones, when he played on the left against Ghana, has been the best winger the US has had. That's kinda sad, really. Zusi has been the next closest to providing positive contributions. Davis and Bedoya haven't shown me much going forward, but at least Bedoya hasn't been a defensive liability.

What do people think about putting Zusi on the left and starting Yedlin on the right wing? As a Spurs supporter I love Jan Vertonghen as a CB, he's a shit LB. I think they can attack him with pace and do some damage. He'll also make some reckless challenges and probably get booked if they pick on him. Go at that side with Johnson and Yedlin, and I think they can get something going over there.

I love the energy Yedlin brings and I was screaming for him to come in this afternoon at the 55 minute mark when we couldnt get out of our own end. If Jozy is indeed back next game and we could add Yedlin, keep Gonzalez and push some more, I think we win the match. I'd love to see us win a Final 16 game one of these days.

Obviously the draw plays such a large role, and this sport can be a cruel game sometimes with 1 mistakes ruining 4 years of work- but I'm hopeful that getting out of the group stage can become the normal expectation moving forward in this country. Back to back World Cups is a start.

So happy to get through. Now it's anyone's guess.

(oh and I was in attendance for their only group win in 2014. BOOM!)

I think good results here, and hopefully the continuance of those good results in the next cycle could possibly help move the US up into a place where they could gain a seed in the 2018 WC. Do that and getting out of the group becomes much easier. The US is getting to a place where getting out of the group should be the expectation. Not since '98 has the US fallen flat in a WC.

Would be really cool to beat Belgium on Tuesday, only twice have they reached the quarterfinals

Belgium is obviously highly respected due to their overall talent level and quality at most every position. Yet, they don't play so cohesively, and they're not used to being in this place in a WC. The pressure is definitely on this "golden generation." I feel like the US may have lucked out a bit in the fact they are not playing an experienced WC side, or usual WC heavyweight.

I've been one of the biggest Jermaine Jones bashers here, constantly calling for him be benched, so let me give him some love, he's been spectacular this tournament and we absolutely wouldn't be here without him.

Bradley, on the other hand, has been awful. He just seems to be mis-touching everything. Never would have dreamed he could be this bad and we could still advance, so just have to make the most of it now.

Agree that Davis was invisible that match and don't think he should start again.

I don't know ... I mean, the coverage has been a 10, for sure, but I think some fucking robots and Gus Johnson calling the games would take this bitch to 11.
There have been times where it seems like the camera guys aren't used to the constant play of soccer, and they'll show a replay of a foul or something, and the camera isn't even focused on the foul occurring. Other than that, it's been pretty solid.

I like Yedlin's energy but I liken him to a 3rd down "see ball, get ball" pass rusher at the moment. I hope I'm wrong but I just have the feeling that he's gonna bring some headaches along with excitement, especially in his first few starting assignments. Is the WC the best place for that, or does Klinsmann continue to use him as a sub to spark the offense?

Agreed with those who say Bradley needs a breather. I don't care how much ground he covers...'hustle' is a tool but it better not be your only tool.

Which is why I love the fact that Klinsmann has been using him as more of a "rover" type player in the midfield. His pace is absolutely unmatched on this squad. Fits the role of "super sub" for this squad perfectly.
