I'm originally from down in the Ironton neck of the woods. I got out while the gettin was good.

Ken came to Ohio State via the Ironton Fighting Tigers. He was a fantastic player at Ironton as an O lineman and LBer.

He was an All-American offensive lineman, and got drafted by the Steelers fairly high. My memory is that he lasted a few days in the Steelers camp, quit, and went home, saying that pro ball was no fun and his heart wasn't in it. It dawned on me then how each level of football is such a different animal. Ken was one of the best college linemen, but wasn't cut out for the NFL.

Next time I saw him was in a car dealership in Ironton - and he seemed perfectly content with that. If you have a tree in Buckeye Grove, I think you have done well enough.

I was talking with Coqui, we were saying how it is great hearing about stories like this. I am old enough to vaguely remember players back in the 60's but rarely know any inside stories of them. Of course I am not saying Ken was from that era. I did have the opportunity to speak with Jim Stillwagon as well as James Laurnitus and Josh Perry. As a little kid I got to shake John Brockington's hand. He seemed huge to me then. I remember the Ohio State Bank here in the Columbus area handing out OSU plastic banks in the shape of a football player. I had written Brockington on mine with a pen. Now one of my daughters has it, but the name has worn off of it kind of like some of my memories.

I got a few more. I met Pete Johnson as a teen. I walked around with my jaw on the floor for a week. He was the largest human being I have ever seen whose normal position was in the offensive backfield. His ankles were the size of my knees. I played safety for my HS at the time I met him, and I fancied myself as a pretty physical run support DB. I couldn't help but wonder what I would do if PJ busted through the line and was coming straight at me. I wouldn't have admitted it then, but now I know what I would have done - run into the stands, sat on my mom's lap, and sucked my thumb.
