2014-2015 B1G Men's Basketball

prediction: barring any injuries, i think we'll be no worse than a 3-seed in the tournament.

I agree. In fact, I would predict a #2 seed. Just a hunch based on a variety of factors, not the least of which is Matta's track record is pretty strong at getting those types of teams regularly at OSU.

This upcoming season I think is similar to 2010 in the sense that almost nobody is going to predict OSU to win the league, and they're getting a good jump-start in the offseason by having an overseas trip, but at the end of the year Matta won't win COY according to the B1G coaches even if they win the league because he has all that talent. Of course this team isn't going to have anyone as good as ET was that year, but there is clearly a lot better talent and depth on the bench with this squad. The schedule in the Big Ten sets up nicely for OSU considering they have only one game vs. UW at the Schott, and they really only have five particularly challenging road games (none of which is likely to be against a team that is seeded especially high, as UM and MSU will both be down somewhat and the other tough road games they have, Minnesota, Indiana and Iowa, are against teams that aren't quite at the level that OSU is at now.

Reports are out there that OSU will host the Campbell Fighting Camels in late November, 11/26. Listening to Paul Keels on the call with phrases like "Fighting Camels with the pumpkin" or "Fighting Camels jockeying for a rebound" would provide some comedic value. Otherwise, another snoozefest.

If you remember their old one, this is a huge improvement.

Six new players with an average height of 6' 7.5"

Not bad for a team that returns only one player over 6' 8"

And now that this OSU team has played mostly zone defense in the exhibitions and if you re-examine that fact from the standpoint of OSU likely switching to being a primarily zone defense team moving forward, then the average height being high makes even more sense. I think with the new rules, they are making it tougher for teams to play great man defense without getting into foul trouble. Matta wants teams that don't foul often, and with the new rules emphasizing allowing freedom of movement, it's almost like the only ways to play good defense without fouling is either have a team that is super athletic across the board or go zone. If you look at the team as is, right now there are guys like Amir, Scott and Loving that I think are all better suited to playing in a zone defense than man defense. Russell, too, I think would be a better as a zone defender with the freedom of movement rules.

lol at least Buckeyes didn't lose on their foreign tour.

Hoosiers just went down to University of Ottawa 109-101.
Ottawa went 18 for 30 from 3, and IU let one guy go 7 for 8! IU clearly has some offensive talent but they need to learn how to guard before they will take off as a team. Reading that one of their players was switching from shooting left-handed to right-handed was not an encouraging note if you're an IU fan.

I don't disagree that the interpretation of the new rules could encourage many teams to play more zone, but why do you think OSU will primarly be zone? I think Matta made mention that he was feeling somewhat comfortable with the man defense and that he wanted to work on some zone and plans to implement some zone, but I haven't heard him say anything in regards to being primarily zone. My perception is that the zone will be more a response to foul trouble (being thin at the 1-2 where the touch fouls can mount quickly) and that is what is precipitating the need to get some zone in place. I think even with the rules, Matta will still prefer to play man, but realizes zone may be necessary in some cases (like we did in 2007). I've always liked the idea of being able to switch defenses out of a timeout or to get the opponent out of whatever groove they might be in offensively.

Illinois senior point guard Tracy Abrams will miss the 2014-15 season after suffering a torn ACL in his right knee during preseason drills, the school announced Thursday. Abrams, who averaged 10.7 points last season, will redshirt this season and return to complete his eligibility in 2015-16.
Surgery to repair the injury has yet to be scheduled.
Abrams led the Illini in assists (3.2 per game) and was second in scoring.
