Sunday, March 8 - Wisconsin

Wednesday-Sunday, March 11-15 - Big Ten tournament, Chicago

Big Ten showed it's not totally stupid, saved the one OSU-UW matchup, perhaps the top-2 in the B1G in the preseason, for the finale. That one has to be circled, it could be a massive matchup, almost like 2007 when OSU and UW were the top-2 teams and a game at OSU on Senior Day in the next-to-last conference game decided who was going to win the conference.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State fans in town to see the Buckeyes football team host Illinois on Saturday night can get a sneak peak of the Buckeyes basketball team.

The Ohio State basketball team will hold its Scarlet and Gray scrimmage on Saturday from 4:30-6 p.m. in Value City Arena. Admission is free and doors open at 4 p.m. Parking is $15 at the lots around Value City Arena.

The No. 16 Buckeyes football team (6-1, 3-0 Big Ten) plays Illinois at 8 p.m. Saturday in Ohio Stadium.

Saturday will offer a glimpse into the new-look Ohio State basketball team, including freshman guard D'Angelo Russell.

The Buckeyes, ranked No. 20 in the preseason coaches poll, play an exhibition game against Walsh on Nov. 9, then open the 2014-15 season against UMass-Lowell on Nov. 14 in Value City Arena.

Man, it's going to be weird to not see Aaron Craft out there.

Honestly, I have been trying to face myself with this reality for the last 4 years since the first time I watched him play and I still am not ready for it. I have never had more fun watching a single college basketball player. Craft was one of the best persons, defenders, and leaders I have ever seen...his effort was unparalleled.

But alas, I will somehow muster the strength to watch one of the best freshmen classes we have seen here (Russell, Tate, and KBD) along with the returning Thompson, Loving, Scott, Kam Williams, and the gang, plus a new Anthony Lee that could do well. Worries me that Giddens won't be here until next year (Amir gives me zero confidence inside based on the past), but I think we can greatly survive that deficiency if we shoot like we are capable of. Plus Amir can play defense if his effort is there.

A few quick notes from my visit to the Walsh game:

Everyone demonstrated that they are ready for prime time with the exception of Bates-Diop. Not saying he isn't, but he didn't demonstrate it.

Tate is tough around the boards. Had all of his points underneath. Great effort. Really like watching him play.

Russel has as smooth a shot as I have seen in some time. Did not see him "take over the game" but did see the potential to do so.

Lee is more physical and athletic than either William or McDonald. Love to watch him play. Lot of energy.

Cam had some nice moves and is very quick. Did not look smooth shooting the ball - may have been pressing after waiting so long to make his debut.

All the new kids are long and athletic.

Loving picked up where he left off last season - which was unfortunate. He looked much better in the second half. Much, much better. (The rest of the team played with less energy in the second half.)

Scott still is not an offensive threat.

Thompson showed signs of being the offensive threat we need him to be.

Williams is still Williams. (Sigh.)

Heard rumors of some sort of transformation with McDonald. They were not confirmed. Still a solid role player though.

Not a fan of watching teams play zone. But we were very effective and used our length to get hands on a lot of shots. We also did a lot of pressing with great effect. At one point Russel at 6'5" was the smallest player on the court and we turned them over.

Most importantly - it was Walsh. They were smaller and slower and everything came relatively easy.

This will be a fun team to watch and offense will be better than last season.

I loved Aaron Craft. I will miss watching him play. But IMO last year we had chemistry issues and he was part of that. There was too much looking to him to do something and too much of him being willing to take on that role. It was often a one man charge. And there was something going on with Ross that I can't put my finger on. Just my opinion but that team had too much talent and experience to be as inconsistent as they sometimes were.

How these new pieces will mesh remains to be seen. But athleticism will not be a problem.

Marc Loving said #Buckeyes "have a lot more chemistry" at this pt in season than last year's team did. "We're a lot tighter group." #buckbk
