Webblog: Handicapping UM's Shot at McDowell...
As I previewed in my post on him earlier this morning, Michigan is definitely still in it. All of the cliff jumping that has been going on around here is definitely premature. None of the certainty of doom & gloom is based on direct, first hand info... but I understand why it's happening: Michigan's bad season narrative vs. all of the pro-MSU reports combined with Spartans strong season.

In the end he may choose Michigan State, but that call has NOT been made yet. That is first hand information corroborated by facts I'm not at liberty to share here. What we can share is he has connected with Michigan coaches a few times in the last couple of days and the in-home was scheduled. That didn't always appear to be a forgone conclusion.

Now to be clear... I'm not nearly as confident as I once was in Michigan's chances of landing him because.... let me reiterate... he really enjoys himself in East Lansing. Word has it that he enjoyed himself even more this past weekend. That said, I can say unequivocally that the anti-MSU sentiment in his circle is stronger than it has ever been. It's as strong as I've ever seen any internal sentiment against a school be. Furthermore, it's not even a secret. It's an issue that the Spartan coaching staff is DEFINITELY aware of and can't do anything about. It does NOT mean Malik won't pick them. It merely means that if he does pick MSU he will be leaping over a pretty huge obstruction.

I think Florida State benefits here, but I Ohio State really does. The Buckeyes were dead in the water a month ago (at least to some in his circle). But I think they've been resuscitated by combination of their persistence, Larry Johnson's arrival, and again... the anti-MSU feeling within his circle.

As for Michigan... they have one more shot to tug on the boyhood affinity heart-strings... to remind him of the connection with the coaches, to emphasize the significant academic advantage, and to further galvanize his parents in an opinion on the best fit. Michigan may not be the definite leader anymore, but they're definitely not out of it either.

Translation: UM is a distant 4th with no official visit (unlike the other 3) with about an hour to sway him via an in home visit followed immediately by a weekend in Columbus.

But admitting that doesn't get fans excited or leave room for delusions of grandeur so it is repackaged and spun into the above hilarity.

Change in McDowell in-home schedule...
Michigan coaches (led by Brady Hoke) will now meet with McDowell and his family Friday morning.
Good in my opinion. Michigan will be fresh in his mind on his way down to Columbus.
is this good or bad? It sounds like a good thing to me but I would love to hear your take Sam.
If that's your opinion independent of this development, fine... but this change of schedule is not a furtherance of the theme you're talking about.
just seems like an uphill battle

lots of things would be better than how this is happening
