2013 Offensive Line Discussion

Didn't see a thread for these guys so I figured I would start one. I was just watching The Game from last year and was reminded how these guys would just wear a DL down by the end of a game. In particular, Marcus Hall pulling to the left while Norwell and Mewhort clean up the front on that zone read was just a thing of beauty. I truly think we have the best 4 OL returning in the country and Coach Warriner really got every last bit of talent out of this group.

That being said, I hope we figure out the RT situation ASAP. The OL meshed really well last year and it is important for continuity sake for Decker to establish himself there. I do think Hall or Norwell have the feet and size to play RT if Elflein is truly our 5th best OL but I just think it is healthier in the long run to have Decker at tackle now to develop, seeing as how he is likely at least one of our future tackles looking forward. It's a little puzzling to me that he hasn't already done that, seeing as how he impressed so much last year and almost beat out Fragel for the spot. Of course Farris is young too from an eligibility standpoint, so really we just need one of these two to step it up.

I am kind of surprised that we haven't heard more out of Dodson, given the praise UFM gave when he faxed in his commitment.

So between Decker, Farris, Dodson, Lisle, and Elflein, the odds are that someone will come thru.

Warriner did say in his Ozone interview that everything would be fine.

I like that Decker was in the competition last year until the end of Fall camp. That says something.

I thought Decker looked really good in the spring game....Jamal Marcus stood no chance.....Spence got around him a couple of times, but he was running around the edge without any thought of pocket contain b/c everyone knew it was pretty much a passing scrimmage and Braxton wasn't going to scramble.....pretty much handled Washington. I think Decker is going to be a heck of a player for us.

On a side note, I was surprised that the 2nd team DL of Miller/Moore/Carter couldn't generate any pass rush again the 2nd team OL of Dodson/Elflein/Baldwin. Thought Miller was going to have a chance to get decent pt, but if he can't get it going against Baldwin, then I wouldn't be so sure anymore. Bosa is in a prime position to take that spot.

To be sure, I think Decker is going to be a heck of a player for us and that is why I more prominently mentioned him. Word was that Farris was just much improved and that is why Decker hasn't cemented himself, but then UFM seemed to dispel that notion (perhaps to just light a fire under his butt). Either way, I think we have healthy competition and will be more than OK at the RT spot. Decker has all the tools and competitive drive to take that spot and excel...if he does, we will have the best OL in the country imo. What is really scary about that is not only are all our weapons mostly back that did fairly well behind these guys, we will be adding J. Hall, Marshall, D. Wilson, etc. to the mix to maximize their ability.

Also of note, we will have some adaptation time starting off the schedule with Buffalo, San Diego St., Cal, and Florida A&M...none of those teams should prove to be too much of a potent DL before Wisconsin. Week 5 and on, this OL and offense in general should be firing on all cylinders.

The starting 5 will be very good no matter who wins right tackle. We have a solid O line coach, now.

I agree, I'm a lot more confident in oline progression after watching Reid develop last year. Not that we didn't have some other great linemen (I.e. mangold, etc) but there are dozens of examples of doing less with more the previous 10 years or so.

The future is bright.

Funny how the best unit on our entire team gets no discussion. This OL might be the best I have seen at OSU (I'm only 25, so factor that in). They absolutely dominated a very good Iowa DL last week. In particular, I was incredibly impressed by Norwell and Linsley...those guys did not let Iowa get any push whatsoever. Also huge props to Coach Warriner, he has turned this unit into a force to be reckoned with. If they keep playing like this, the offense will keep rolling.

A- game tonight. A+ for run blocking and B+ for pass blocking. Let the rush come up the middle a couple of times to get to Braxton or it would have been an A.

Awesome game though. Keep building momentum and roll everybody!
