The FBI was last night hunting a 12-strong terrorist sleeper cell linked to the Boston marathon bomb brothers.

Police believe Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were specially trained to carry out the devastating attack.

More than 1,000 FBI agents were last night working to track down the cell and arrested a man and two women 60 miles from Boston in the hours before Dzhokhar's dramatic capture after a bloody shootout on Friday.

A source close to the investigation said: We have no doubt the brothers were not acting alone. The devices used to detonate the two bombs were highly sophisticated and not the kind of thing people learn from Google.

They were too advanced. Someone gave the brothers the skills and it is now our job to find out just who they were. Agents think the sleeper cell has up to a dozen members and has been waiting several years for their day to come.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Our society is open to people of other nations by design - and these cocksuckers are going to try to take advantage of it.

This time, we didn't get scared. We got pissed off and united instead. We didn't fold like Spain did in 2004 when AQ bombed the subway. It'll be interesting to see if this causes the terrorists to go for higher profile/more spectacular targets or not.

Thought about giving this its own thread on chemical safety, but most of the discussion of the fertilizer plant blast was here so I posted this here.

The headline just talks about disclosure rules, which are bad enough not to follow, but the article even mentions not installing safeties. Unreal.

The fertilizer plant that exploded on Wednesday, obliterating part of a small Texas town and killing at least 14 people, had last year been storing 1,350 times the amount of ammonium nitrate that would normally trigger safety oversight by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Yet a person familiar with DHS operations said the company that owns the plant, West Fertilizer, did not tell the agency about the potentially explosive fertilizer as it is required to do, leaving one of the principal regulators of ammonium nitrate - which can also be used in bomb making - unaware of any danger there.

Fertilizer plants and depots must report to the DHS when they hold 400 lb (180 kg) or more of the substance. Filings this year with the Texas Department of State Health Services, which weren't shared with DHS, show the plant had 270 tons of it on hand last year.

The chemical industry (and more important to me, the plastic industry) have enough problems with BS environmental rules and regulations, we gotta be safe though.

Chemicals don't kill people, chemicals misused kill people and that is entirely the fault of management. Safety is job number one of management and they just didn't give a [censored]. Serious prison time should come from this in a just world.

In its RMP filings, West Fertilizer reported on its storage of anhydrous ammonia and said that it did not expect a fire or explosion to affect the facility, even in a worst-case scenario. And it had not installed safeguards such as blast walls around the plant.

The first prediction was that veterans of Iraq/Afghanistan with similar injuries would be brought in as part of their therapy. The second was that a few years down the road we're going to see a number of these folks running in the Boston Marathon on their prostheses.

400 pounds seems ridiculously low.

When my grandfather still had a ton of farm land, we would buy that stuff 3-4 tons at a time.

and we weren't even a blip on the radar for the feed store we bought from.
the sugar cane farmers around here bought truckloads(plural) at a time.

we also bought diesel for the tractors 1000 gallons at a time, a couple times per year.


after the Oklahoma City bombing, the feds came talk to my family.
stayed about 38 seconds on the property.
saw what we were doing with fertilizer and diesel, and left without asking very many questions.

Highlights:

At approximately 2:42 p.m. (i.e., approximately seven minutes before the first explosion), Bomber One can be seen detaching himself from the crowd and walking cast on Boylston Street towards the Marathon finish line. Approximately 15 seconds later, he can be seen passing directly in front of the Forum Restaurant and continuing in the direction of the location where the first explosion occurred. His knapsack is still on his back.

At approximately 2:45 p.m., Bomber Two can be seen detaching himself from the crowd and walking cast on Boylston Street toward the Marathon finishing line. He appears to have the thumb of his right hand hooked under the strap of his knapsack and a cell phone in his left hand. Approximately 15 seconds later, he can be seen stopping directly in front of the Forum Restaurant and standing near the metal border among numerous spectators, with his back to the camera, facing the runners, He then can be seen apparently slipping his knapsack onto the ground. A photograph taken from the opposite side of the street shows the knapsack on the ground at Bomber Two's feet.

The Forum Restaurant video shows that Bomber Two remained in the same spot for approximately four minutes, occasionally looking at his cell phone and once appearing to take a picture with it. At some point he appears to look at his phone, which is held at approximately waist level, and may be manipulating the phone. Approximately 30 seconds before the first explosion, he lifts his phone to his ear as if he is speaking on his cell phone, and keeps it there for approximately 18 seconds. A few seconds after he finishes the call, the large crowd of people around him can be seen reading to the first explosion. Virtually every head turns to the east (towards the finish line) and stares in that direction in apparent bewilderment and alarm. Bomber Two, virtually alone among the individuals in front of the restaurant, appears calm. He glances to the cast and then calmly but rapidly begins moving to the west, away from the direction of the finish line. He walks away without his knapsack, having left it on the ground where he had been standing. Approximately 10 seconds later, an explosion occurs in the location where Bomber Two had placed his knapsack.

On April 21, 2013, the FBI searched DZHOKHAR TSARNAEV's dormitory room at 7341 Pine Dale Hall at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, pursuant to a search warrant. The FBI seized from his room, among other things, a large pyrotechnic, a black jacket and a white hat of the same general appearance as those worn by Bomber Two at the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013, and BBs.

It's a few days later, I'm actually surprised the news media hasn't made a deal about whether or not the two brothers' guns were legal or where they got them from.
