7 p.m. against Maryland in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Dec. 4.

Ohio State was tied for second in the Big Ten. I don't know how the Buckeyes got the 7th team in the ACC, since I thought they like to match teams with similar teams (in the previous year's standings).

I'm guessing Maryland is going to throw the game to make the B1G look good.

Maryland could get a top-4 finish in the ACC this year. They have most of their team coming back, and several of them were formerly top-100 recruits. UNC, Duke and Syracuse have good odds of finishing ahead of them. ND has a solid, NCAA tourney team, and Virginia might have a decent team. But Maryland has a decent chance to finish as the top team outside of the probable top-3 (Duke, NC and Cuse), although ND might have to be the favorite for #4 at this point. Most of the teams in the Big Ten would lose to Maryland if they had them as their matchup. If you look at the other options to match up OSU against, you weren't going to get Duke again, and ND was already on the schedule. So the top options other than MD were UNC and Syracuse, neither of whom appear in line for a particularly strong year for their respective programs. And you know they like to get NCAA tourney rematches in the Challenge, so that gave IU the game with 'Cuse. I suppose they thought UNC-MSU was a more high profile matchup than UNC-OSU - hard to disagree with that looking at things from the standpoint of MSU being considered better than OSU this season. Maryland is still going to fare pretty well in the ACC this season, and I think it's a more attractive matchup than meets the eye when you look at Maryland's roster/returning players closer.

Ranking college basketball’s best current programs: 6-10
Best Programs
By Andy Glockner

No. 7 Ohio State
Pluses: Great coach and staff, established as a national recruiting player, tremendous on-court success
Minuses: Nitpicking: Still a football school?

The vast majority of college hoops fans probably don’t realize how good Ohio State has been under Thad Matta, in part because of a couple of untimely NCAA tournament losses, including to Wichita State in last season’s Elite Eight. Ohio State has been a No. 1 or No. 2 seed six times since 2006. The Buckeyes have made four straight Sweet 16s, including two Elite Eights and a Final Four. They recruit at a very strong level and don’t have very many dips, however modest, on the floor, even with significant personnel turnover due to early departures. In a league where Michigan State and Indiana are considered the marquee brands, Ohio State has been outperforming them. Thad Matta is well established and there are very few gigs that would be able to extract him, so the future looks very solid, as well.

Interesting, but you can catch the dumb mistake already. They are putting MSU ahead of OSU even though they admit OSU has outperformed them under Matta. God, I get sick of all the MSU/Izzo love among virtually all of the pundits as they overrate MSU almost every year (the one exception was 2012 when Green unexpectedly blossomed into a superstar and carried them) and overrate them as to their place in the Big Ten. They will fall back to the pack in the Big Ten a bit after this upcoming season because Izzo's recruiting in the 2011-14 classes isn't half as good as it was if you look at the talent that he had on the 2009 team (six top-50 players and that's not counting top-50 busts Dahlman and Herzog, plus a 2009 NBA second round pick in addition to future B1G POY/NBA'er Draymond Green). Right now Izzo has a total of two top-50 recruits projected for the 2014-15 team, and one of them (Harris) could turn pro after this year. UM emerging has stepped on the toes of MSU, Illinois is up and coming and IU is getting back to being a perennial power at least in the Big Ten. MSU is going to keep fading unless Izzo turns around the recruiting fortunes, and it's tougher now because OSU, UM, IU and Illinois are rejuvenated and all taking away from the ability of Izzo to mine the midwest for top talent. And it's starting to show in the talent on Izzo's roster waning, as he has done a poor job of snagging top-100 recruits from outside of the mdiwest and the ones he's getting in the area are lower rated than the ones he used to have.

Ohio State men’s basketball: Early start on practice
By Bob Baptist
The Columbus Dispatch Friday September 27, 2013

  • The calendar has yet to turn to October, but college basketball teams will turn up the volume on practice this weekend.

An NCAA rule change last spring expanded the time in which Division I men’s teams can conduct preseason practice, from mid-October previously to, now, six weeks before the season opener.

Ohio State will tip off its season on Nov. 9 against Morgan State at Value City Arena, meaning the Buckeyes will begin their regular-season routine of full-squad, full-week practices on Saturday. They have an exhibition game against Walsh University on Nov. 3.

The new rule permits teams to practice 30 of the 42 days leading up to their first game. They are limited to 20 hours of practice time and six days per week.

“We’ll probably be three days on, one day off, pretty much throughout” the preseason, coach Thad Matta said this week.
