2013-14 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

Jeff Boals mentioned as possible assistant coaches ready to become head coaches. Not really shocking, since he seems to get feelers every year.

Ohio State assistant Jeff Boals talks with AD Gene Smith. Will he leave the Buckeyes soon?

If he does go lets hope he takes his good buddy Gene with him.

Every game this team wins, I wonder how they got as many wins as they have this season. This team has done well just to make the NCAA tournament and get 25 wins. Anything in the NCAA tournament is gravy for this squad.

Given the undefeated start, expectations were very high for this team. Perhaps that is why so many people seem to think of this team as some kind of failure.

Here's why I don't. Between the departure of Fred Taylor in 1976 and Thad Matta's arrival in 2004, Ohio State had only two years in which they won 25 games or more. Fred Taylor managed it only 4 times.

This team makes 6 times that the Buckeyes have won 25 or more under Matta. They are not yet done and, given that they regain their confidence shooting

There was a long period I am hoping that Ohio State will spend the days before the tournament, taking 2000 or more shots a day (1000 at the free throw line) and otherwise resting. They look completely exhausted and need to put their own disappointment behind them and regain their confidence shooting.

Personally, with the right draw, I think that they potentially can go deeper than the Sweet 16. Rest. Lots of shooting. Eye of the Buckeye.

With all due respect to your post and Coach Matta, I think it is sort of unfair to compare Matta's coaching record with the coaching record of Coach Taylor. I believe in college basketball today there is quite a few more regular-season games that are played thus the opportunity for more wins.

Especially the 15 games the Buckeyes played to start the year...sorry but that was a supremely weak schedule.

No discredit to Matta's overall work with this years team, but I care not for the 25-win mantra this year.

Yeah, I'm not really sure the thought process behind the OOC scheduling this year. Some of it was bad luck (lightweight draw in the ACC-Big Ten challenge with Maryland, and Notre Dame and Marquette having down years). But that's still only three games out of fifteen that may have been viewed as "marquee" back when scheduled years ago. There needs to be more than 20% of the OOC games against quality opponents.

Funny thing is that the most impressive wins OOC this year likely were against teams thought of as throwaways when scheduled--North Dakota State finished 25-6 and is headed to the Dance as the champs of the Summit League, Delaware (25-9) is headed to the Dance as the champs of the Colonial Athletic, and American (20-12) is headed to the Dance as the champs of the Patriot League.

Every coach since Taylor has coached seasons pretty much as long as our current ones, so Steve's point is a good one considering how long ago Taylor finished here. Better points of direct comparison between Matta and Taylor would probably be win %, Big Ten titles, tourney record and NCs. And while that one NC is on Taylor's side of the scale, Matta's winning rate is significantly higher, and he is on at least as good a pace for B1G titles. Taylor may have had a higher peak, but Matta is the most consistent winner in OSU bball history.

I am not trying to belittle Matta's record at all. I guess my point in comparing him to Coach Taylor is times are lower bit different now. Not only with the types of games that are played ball with the freshman eligibility and the one and done and just the way the game is played today. Both of them are outstanding men and coaches and represented Ohio State at the highest level.

From the article: Without NBA talent, Ohio State must grind out wins in new formula for NCAA Tournament 2014

That means playing great defense, forcing turnovers, not shooting a horrible percentage and manufacturing points. The Buckeyes needs three of those things on any given night to win. Grinding.

Ohio State allows only 59.2 points per game, the best defense in the Big Ten and ninth-best in the country. That's a must since its 69.8 points per game is lower than any of the previous four teams, all of which were in the 70s and advanced to at least the Sweet 16.

In reality, the Buckeyes have more in common with Wichita State and Creighton than they do with Kansas or Kentucky.

Can they win this year the mid-major way?

"I think you can," Matta said.
