Great win for Norfolk State. This tournament needed that, because there hadn't been much excitement the first day and a half.

The NCAA really needs to change the way the refs stop the game and look at the monitor all the time at the end of games in order to put a couple of tenths back on the clock. The fact that they stop the game affects it more than a couple of tenths usually would - teams get a free timeout, which is significant. Guys that are tired get a rest they wouldn't have gotten otherwise, players have more time to think about their upcoming free throws, etc.

Plus, when the clock is below 5 seconds, during the timeout the coach can be planning his defensive strategy based on having 2.7 or 3.5 seconds (or whatever) remaining. Then, at the end of the timeout, they add .3 seconds, which can change how he wanted his defensive players to act, based on the time remaining. Extra time can change his instructions on when to foul, or how many dribbles to allow an opponent to take, whether to guard the guy throwing the inbounds pass, etc.

The other thing about it is during the other 39 minutes of the game time outs are not awarded the same way. The clock never stops the instant the time out is called. There is always a slight delay because humans are stopping the clock. Then in the final seconds, we award them instantaneously.

The end of our win at Sparty was the epitome of such nonsense.
