2012 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I read that to say that once a player is defined as a "recruited walk on" if they ever play they have to go on schollie - even outside the two years. But if they play within two years they also count retroactively and could create an after the fact violation.

Good find...what matters is if you are a "recruited athlete":

Actions by staff members or athletic representatives that cause a prospect to become a recruited prospect at that institution are:

A. Providing the prospect with an official visit.
B. Having an arranged, in-person, off-campus encounter with the prospect or the prospect's parents or legal guardians for the purpose of recruitment;and
C. Initiating or arranging a telephone contact with the prospect, the prospects relatives or legal guardians on more than one occassion for the purpose of recruitment and
D. Issuing a National Letter of Intent or the institution written offer of athletic related financial aid to the prospect (excluding summer term awards prior to inital full-time enrollment).

The actual reference in the NCAA Rules comes from Bylaw 15.5.1:

15.5.1.1 No Athletics Aid—Certification Required. A student-athlete (except for a recruited football or
basketball student-athlete) who does not receive athletically related financial aid per Bylaw 15.5.1-(a) through
Bylaw 15.5.1-(c) but receives institutional financial aid (as set forth in Bylaw 15.02.4.1) shall not be a counter
if the faculty athletics representative and the director of financial aid that the student-athlete’s financial aid have
certified was granted without regard in any degree to athletics ability. The certification shall be kept on file in the
office of the athletics director.
15.5.1.2 Football or Basketball, Varsity Competition. In football or basketball, a student-athlete who
was recruited by the awarding institution and who receives institutional financial aid (as set forth in Bylaw
15.02.4.1) granted without regard in any degree to athletics ability does not have to be counted until the student-
athlete engages in varsity intercollegiate competition (as opposed to freshman, B-team, subvarsity, intramural
or club competition) in those sports. For this provision to be applicable, there shall be on file in the office
of the athletics director certification by the faculty athletics representative, the admissions officer and the chair
of the financial aid committee that the student’s admission and financial aid were granted without regard in any
degree to athletics ability. (Revised: 1/16/93 effective 8/1/93, 1/11/94, 6/20/04)
15.5.1.2.1 Football or Basketball—Partial Qualifier. [Note: The following bylaw applies to studentathletes
who first enrolled in a collegiate institution full time prior to August 1, 2005.] In football or basketball,
a student-athlete who is a partial qualifier and who was recruited by the awarding institution and
who receives institutional financial aid that is not from athletics sources and that is based on financial need
only shall be a counter and included in the maximum awards limitations set forth in this bylaw when the
student-athlete participates in an institutional practice session or represents the institution against outside
competition. (Revised: 1/16/93 effective 8/1/93, 1/11/94)
15.5.1.2.2 Exception—Receipt of Institutional Academic Aid Only. In football or basketball, a
student-athlete who was recruited by the awarding institution and whose only source of institutional financial
aid is academic aid based solely on the recipient’s academic record at the certifying institution, awarded
independently of athletics interests and in amounts consistent with the pattern of all such awards made by
the institution, may compete without counting in the institution’s financial aid team limits, provided he or
she has completed at least one academic year of full-time enrollment at the certifying institution and has
achieved a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.300 (on a 4.000 scale) at the certifying institution.
(Adopted: 10/27/05 effective 8/1/06)
Bottom line: If the university gives a recruited athlete financial aid via a non-athletic award, then this whole "if he plays he gets a schollie" thing comes into play. Otherwise it does not. So if a walk-on is paying his own way or is getting non-institution financial aid, there is no "trigger." The trigger can also be avoided if the university provides an academic schollie and the student gets a minimum 3.3 GPA.

Ohio State coach Luke Fickell is on campus at La Salle High School

Probably to check out '13 CB Jameel Hytchye, but no doubt he'll be touching base with '14 WR Derek Kief and '15 DE Jordan Thompson, who should be among the top few players in their classes by the time they are seniors.

Is it possible this has to do with Joe Burger?

Guess this fits here...

Ohio State has the inside track on the prestigious All-Apostrophe award. The Buckeyes have commitments from Cleveland safety De'van Bogard, Canton, Ohio, tailback Bri'onte Dunn, Windsor, Colo., offensive tackle Joey O'Connor and Canton defensive end Se'von Pittman. If new Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, the master of the flip, could somehow convince Murfreesboro, Tenn., tailback I'Tavius Mathers to spurn Ole Miss and come to Columbus, the Buckeyes would be the princes of intra-name punctuation.

Yahoo hypes up the blogger that we discussed the other day. I think that there was some speculation regarding the veracity of the interview. Guess we may find out now...

Not overly worth the read... just documenting.

There are great college sports rivalries all over the country, but few can compare with the intensity of Michigan and Ohio State. The bordering Midwestern states harbor a legendary threshold of hate for one another, the likes of which can even make Red Sox and Yankees fans blush.
