2012 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Preferred walk on?

I doubt someone would want to walk on at a school halfway around the country, and pay out of state tuition.

This could just be a case of us being way under the number of Official Visits allowed, and having some to spare. Giving this kid an OV would be a good show of faith to the school, may endear us more to Davonte, and might also get the kid some looks at other schools.

Kind of the way I'm leaning on this one too Merih...

Just a question from my ignorance, but if an athlete is recruited by and also takes an official visit to an institution, i.s. school pays for transportation, housing, meals, etc. . .

can he later become a walk-on at that same school?

If he plays in his first two years he must go on scholarship, otherwise he can remain a walk-on...the same thing that happened with Thoma.

Okay, color me confused. The kid's "interest" list is pretty much a who's-who of the top teams in the country. Now, a kid can list whoever he wants as an interest, but Rivals does list his recruiters from a good number of the schools, which implies that the interest is mutual. And it's not like he's new to the scene, because he has articles about visits dating back a year. But not a single school in the country has offered him, so... what gives? How can the kid have real interest from OSU, Bama, USC, Oregon, Stanford, etc, and not have even a mid-major offer yet?

Won't start a thread for him yet, but thought this was interesting:

No offers listed on his Scout profile...

Definitely a better OT than a DT from what I saw in his highlight reel. He has long arms but as a DT was consistently getting pushed back.

As an OT, he was a little grabby, but he consistently pancaked if not threw people off balance.

Link? This has been said many times, yet I can find nothing in the NCAA rulebook to confirm, and I do not believe any such rule exists.

This link addresses the issue:

http://alabama.scout.com/2/45826.html

Specifically this:

What North means is that from the NCAA?s point of view, there is no difference between an athlete placed immediately on scholarship in the fall and a walk-on officially ?recruited? by the coaching staff. ?If they are classified as a recruited walk-on, then they have to count against you if they play in a game,? North said. ?And they would also have to go back and retroactively count against the initial limit (for the year they entered school), if they play before two years.?

I read that to say that once a player is defined as a "recruited walk on" if they ever play they have to go on schollie - even outside the two years. But if they play within two years they also count retroactively and could create an after the fact violation.
