2012 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I think we are sitting right at 82, although I could be wrong. I think there's going to be 3-4 transfers. There's another possibility of a med hardship, with certain guys taking visits and rumored academic trouble, I don't think its out of the realm of possibility to see someone committed not in this class on signing day. So that right there is 5 or 6 more guys in this class. I think Urban Meyer knows what's going on.

Exactly. I don't think on Feb 1st Meyer is going to look around and say "What, there's a limit?"

We have 14 DBs and 13 DLs returning, with a total of 7 incoming commits at those two positions. No need to speculate on names but I am sure one or more in those two groups has realized that any hopes of playing football on a regular basis lie elsewhere. The 82 limit isn't a problem until incoming recruits enroll in the fall. Transfers don't need to move until the fall to start their one year clock. No rush for anyone to change schools and best opportunities for some may not be clear until after signing day.

Scout (Free) BANK Blog: Urban Momentum Continues

Another weekend at Ohio State. Another four-star commitment for Urban Meyer. And that might not be all that comes out of last weekend's recruiting possibilities. Let's take a quick look at how things went for Meyer and the Buckeyes.
In what is becoming the norm at Ohio State, Urban Meyer hosted several top prospects over the weekend on official visits, and there was good news to celebrate on Sunday evening. Let's take a look at where things stand currently, and what is upcoming for Meyer and the Buckeyes.
Taylor Decker: Obviously, the big tackle's commitment was the biggest news to come out of last weekend's visits. Landing Decker is the first step in repairing the recent damage done to the offensive line, and Meyer knows he has more work to do. Ohio State needs to add one more highly-rated tackle, and then one more inside player. Meyer recognized where Ohio State was weakest soon after being hired, and has addressed offensive line needs with a vengeance. Decker goes into the two-deep today, and could be a starter in his second season with Ohio State.
Joey O'Connor: Another great visit for Ohio State, and O'Connor fills the need for an inside player. He should be on the commitment list at some point, effectively eliminating Alex Kozan, and O'Connor would be the better player in my opinion. He will red-shirt next season in all likelihood, and look to learn pass-blocking schemes, as he played in a triple option in high school. O'Connor would be considered a higher-rated player than most of the offensive linemen Ohio State has taken in the past two classes, with Decker and Brian Bobek as exceptions. The needs at tackle are greater, but the guards aren't exactly an area of strength going forward.

I have been following recruiting online for more than a decade. I have learned to live by certain "rules for recruiting" that help me deal with what happens during the last few weeks of the recruiting process. Those rules are as follows:

1. Starting in late December the primary role of the the recruiting staff is to dig trenches and hold on to what we have.

2. If a new name appears it inevitably means we have missed out on someone with a higher ranking.

3. The only reason to look at uncommitted recruits in the Top 100 list is to see how other schools are doing.

4. Any rumor that highly rated but uncommitted recruit is leaning our way is bogus and likely had its genesis in a rookie post on The Ozone or Bucknuts.

5. Pictures of highly rated but uncommitted recruits wearing OSU gear are either photoshopped or practical jokes.

6. Despite what you are hearing, we don't have a chance with Barksdale.

7. Signing day is painful. Any surprises will be unpleasant. Hold your breath and try to get through it as best you can.

I think it is time for some new rules.

I think it is time for some new rules.

New rules with Urban Meyer;

1. The Tress rifle recruiting approach has been replaced my The Meyer Shot Gun blast. Expect 80-100 offers each year instead of 40-50 under Tress.

2. An offer does not mean Urban Meyer will accept. He decides unlike the group decisions of the past.

3. Agressive is in. Laid back is out.

4. We will go after high profile national recruits. The usual 10-12 from Ohio.

Some offers are conditional. Others are of the "any interest...because if you do there's an offer waiting" variety. But I think they will be fairly black and white with the in-state offers. If an Ohio kid gets an offer, you can bet it is most likely of the "commitable" kind.

That's a good explanantion, Wad. Those national offers will be given to gauge and attract interest. They will not always commitable.

Also, UFM won't want to give an in-state kid an iffy offer because he won't want to take the risk of ruining a relationship with a coach/school/region in Ohio.

Ok what is going on? It's 5:53 in the AM..surely there are some wise and talented young men out there ready to become Buckeyes!

The path of the Rightous Buckeye man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of wolverine men. Blessed is he who, in the name of Championships and complete Dominance, shepherds the Strong into the Shoe, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of Amazing recruits. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy My recruits. And you will know My name is Urban Meyer when I lay My vengeance and score 70 points upon thee.
