2012 tOSU Linebacker (LB) discussion

I'm excited that there should be a lot of competition for playing time at LB this season. Crowell will, hopefully, be 100%, Grant could be a great one, and then we have four new recruits (at the moment) who are hungry to compete and win. It also seems like we'll have good speed at the position. Josh Perry has enrolled early as well, so he has a bit more time to learn and prepare. It's much too early to speculate on who will play, but the possibilities sure are exciting. :)

My fault, wasn't trying to call out guys, I guess I was trying to be inquisitive and just thinking about our numbers on the rosters for incoming recruits.
The Lbs will be a young crew next year, and it'll be interesting to see who plays and who, if any get redshirted

It's been a while since I've read something like this about OSU linebacker corps. The drop off of 2011 was startling, especially in the Michigan game when Shazier had to play despite limping, and this doesn't sound as if there is anything in the tank or the pipeline that's going to change the situation.

What a run from Ike Kelly, to Gradishar, to Cousineau, Spielman, Tovar, Johnson, Diggs, Katzenmoyer, Wilhelm, Hawk, to Laurenitus, to Rolle. (and that's listing only those named AA) I guess the odds had to catch up sometime.

Marek was the king of the Michigan games.

Too soon to write off Grant as well. He had to be a disapointment to the program early but if the light goes on....

Are you kidding me? Christ, I know we live in the era of instant gratification but to call a freshman a disappointment to the program is beyond harsh. Come on man! Show a little perspective.

Over pursuit was a huge problem last year. There is one linebacker in particular that overran tackle after tackle on the edge that should have been TFL and turned into big gains.

The LBs were hardly stellar in 04. They made strides late but got worked by b10 basement dwellers along the way.

Losing Crowell & Price was devastating, particularly the latter. With Ejuan, they scrape by as a solid unit, especially since the third LB is infrequently used.

We got spoiled by an unbelievable run of greatness with very few speedbumps. The same held true at WR and DB.

Disappointment early as in early in his career. No reason to get too excited until you read the whole thing. My post was in a response to a deleted post that excluded him from the LB discussion.

That he didn't get any playing time this year (on this team)showed that he struggled a bit with the transition. Unless your last name is Grant why are you so protective?

That was a complete oversight on my behalf, Grant should've been in there. Not sure why my post got deleted though...I don't recall speculating on transfers at all?

For what it's worth I feel our LB's will be just fine one way or another. At points last year it seemd like they were just waiting..and catching. I just think there will be a little more attacking and stopping this year. And IMO if the upper classmen, and I think they will, don't step up..then we're going to have some young guys getting some valuable playing time. I mean when we first got Urban..I thought hey we're going to score some points..can't wait to see the O in the spring game..but now I think the competition on that front seven on the D side of the ball is going to be some of the best stuff we hear about until opening day.

I'm STILL waiting for Ejuan Price to make an impact here. He was obviously way overrated.

If that qualifies me for an infraction, I just don't care.

He transferred to Pitt a while ago (actually, the moment Tressel resigned). Guess his heart was never set on being a Buckeye.

I highly doubt speed was the problem this year. I attribute it more to Fickell having to focus on managing the whole defense, and Vrabel having to learn the ropes on the fly. I remember that both AJ and James directly attributed most of their success at OSU to Fickell. While that probably isn't completely true, the lack of Fickell imo was a big part of why our lb corp didn't do as well as past years. It might also be that Vrabel, coming from the NFL, overwhelmed most of our kids with information. It seemed like they were overthinking things at times instead of relying on their instincts.

Just my $0.02, I could be completely wrong :oh:

Try to add a bit more sarcasm next time, Max. I don't think they picked up on it.
