High School 2012 State Playoffs (Official Thread)

So much for my Division I pick. St.Edward's went down to Mentor 63-56. I thought that only schools west of the Mississippi played football like that:lol:

Since I have a sophomore on the Mentor team, I was there for that game. Defense was optional in the game, well except when it mattered.

I must say, when Mentor went down 56-35 with about 4 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter, I thought the game was close to being over. I was beginning to formulate the off-season workout regime and how it would fold into lacrosse workouts. The fact that Mentor rattled off 28 unanswered points and actually had 3 defensive stops in the 4th quarter (one was a 3 and out...unheard of in this game!) was simply amazing. Not being a fan of private schools that have an unfair advantage via recruiting, the stunned silence from the other side was worth the price of admission.

By far the most exciting high school game I have seen. And Mitch Trubisky had the best performance by a QB I have seen. Around 470 yards through the air and about 100 on the ground.

Next up Iggy. Only team to beat Mentor this year. Personally, I thought Iggy was the best team in the state even after losing to St. Eds and I still believe that. However, after the game I witnessed last night, nothing will surprise me, including Mentor beating Iggy this week.

Saturday 11/10/12, I sat in the stands at Byers Field and watched what was, at that time, the best high school football game I had ever seen. Mentor overcoming a 21-point deficit in the 3rd quarter to score 28 unanswered points against St. Eds to win a thriller 63-56. Added excitement for me was that my son is on the Mentor team, but removing that tidbit, it was still the best high school game I had ever seen, up to that point in time.

Last night, I was back at Byers Field and saw what is now the best high school game I have ever seen between Mentor and St. Ignatius. I didn't think it was possible to top the Mentor-Eds game, but that game last night did. Again, Mentor prevailed 57-56 in a 3OT thriller.

Sunday 10/28/12, all the talk in NE Ohio was about the "Holy War"; it was the first time both Eds and Iggy were undefeated for that game, and how "Holy War II" was looming on the horizon in the Regional Finals. It is really nice to see neither private school from the "Holy War" advance to the state semi-finals, and that both schools were taken down by the same team, Mentor.

Mentor's QB must be a very special player. North Carolina will be getting a good one. I just hope we get a better one.

I just became a Mentor fan.

With two of Northeast Ohio?s heavyweight football programs slugging it out offensively ? to the tune of 1,234 yards and, to that point, a combined 111 points ? the Division I, Region 1 final came down to a two-point conversion.

It was a situation in which the Mentor Cardinals had some history.
In 2006. Mentor was on the wrong end of a two-point conversion in overtime, losing to Hilliard Davidson, 36-35.

This time, the Cardinals found themselves on the opposite side of that equation, with an opportunity to go for two and knock second-seeded St. Ignatius out of the playoffs. If Mentor failed to convert, however, the Cardinals would be heading home.

Making the decision more difficult was the fact that the Mentor offense was rolling, matching the Ignatius offense touchdown for touchdown for the first three possessions of overtime.

Decisions, decisions.
? See a photo gallery from this game

Coach Steve Trivisonno didn?t hesitate, keeping the kicking team on the sideline and sending his offense back onto the field to go for the win. After a St. Ignatius timeout, the Cardinals put the ball in the hands of their star quarterback, Mitch Trubisky.

?We knew before we even scored that we were going for two,? Trubisky said. ? ?Triv? had confidence in our offense and we knew were going to go win it, and we just went out and did it.?

Trubisky rolled to his left and found his favorite target, Brandon Fritts, along the left sideline in the end zone, giving Mentor the win and causing the Cardinals? sideline to erupt.

I would bet Pete Rose $500 that this week, Mitch will be named Mr. Football. He is very deserving of this award too. Not only is Mitch a pretty darn good QB, but during the playoffs, he has elevated his game. UNC has to be pleased to see that against the best competition, Mitch plays better and better.

And I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Mitch is a better person than he is a football player.
