2012 Masters from Augusta

My picks in our Masters pool, done by proxy by my idiot golf partner after he had had approximately 37 Makers and Cokes:

Hunter Mahan
Bill Haas
Webb Simpson
Zach Johnson
Geoff Ogilvy
Johnson Wagner
Charles Howell III
Robert Garrigus

I do love the Haas pick...I am guessing he is around a 44L.

Read an article (forget where) the other day where they interviewed quite a few of the players regarding which hole they ranked as the toughest and, somewhat of a surprise, most of them said that #11 was the most difficult while a few mentioned #1.

Found the article

What's the hardest hole at the Masters?

David Feherty: "Ohhhhhh, mother of god, No. 11 is so tough. It is a cunningly disguised par-6. For starters, the only real distance between a green and a tee at Augusta (National) is at No. 11. They have taken the tee all the way back into the woods, so you have that walk, a long one and up a hill, and you can't help but think what is ahead of you. Nothing but danger lurks in front of you at No. 11. I think the tee is inside Carolina now.

If you can manage to hit the fairway, you're still in trouble. Ben Hogan said he never aimed at the green with his second shot, and he always aimed to the right of the green to avoid the water hazard. And that's Ben Hogan talking. And yet you can make 6 from the right of the green as well. You can hit it up near the 12th tee. Whenever I played the hole, I played for a 5."

Practice Rounds mean very little, but Freddie looked bad yesterday. Really stiff walking...I feel bad for him. Love the guy, love when he does well at Augusta and always root for him.

I don't think this will be a good Masters Tournament for him based on what I watched yesterday. The caveat being, it sounds like Freddie can wake up with a good back or bad back on any given day. I just don't see 4 good days in a row which is what he needs.

Of all the golfers I watched yesterday, KJ Choi may have been the most fun. Guy is awesome to watch practice and was money on the greens. I think he is going to do very well.

Tiger started in morning with Freddie but stopped playing after 9 holes. Didn't see him at all.

I thought Rory looked ridiculously unfocused and care-free. Compared to all of the other golfers who worked on the different pin-placements, angles they'd see into greens, etc...Rory just kind of plays and does his own thing. He was with Tom Watson which was cool...

I think Tiger, KJ Choi, and Bubba would be my 3 picks. I think they're all playing pretty well and will be around on Sunday.

Thanks for the insights.

I wish Freddie was feeling better and we can hope for four days in a row but you're right about the odds of that happening.

I love Bubba's game and it is the right game to tackle Augusta (long, creative, "angular") but I wouldn't put my money on him. He is just too prone to mistakes and bad decisions.

I've heard from several people who have walked with KJ at the Memorial that his is super friendly; super fun to be around. I root for the guy.

Harrington hot out of the gate. (-2) after 2.

Couples gets a late afternoon tee time. That helps. Maybe.

Last two pairings should be fun to watch:
(1:42) Bubba Watson, Cabrera, McIlroy
(1:53) Mahan, Hanson, Mickelson

ESPN's embargo on these first two rounds kinda sucks. I'd love to see some actual golf right now instead of people rehashing the same storylines. It's a very compelling Masters and I'd love to see some of it. Waiting until 3 p.m. to see the tourney is rough, but I understand they want it in prime time and will lose viewers during working hours. I just want to see some golf!

Coverage on masters.com begins at 10:45 a.m. By noon, you'll have three different viewing choices on the website. I've watched it this way in the past, it's not too bad.

Nice. On UVerse there are about 4 channels dedicated to the Masters - Amen Corner, 2 featured groups, and the 15/16th holes - but those don't start coverage until 3 either. Thanks for the heads up though.

Just be glad you can watch some of it on Thursday/Friday. Ahhhh, the bad old days of only watching Saturday & Sunday, and even then only being able to watch the back 9.

Golf Channel has completely spoiled me this golf season. Coverage Thursday and Friday of most all PGA tournaments and some Euro stuff, LPGA and Seniors tour, as well as replays that evening starting at like 8 p.m. have saturated my television viewing with golf. And I love it.
