Good selections. I would had put money on Stoney or Nathan Williams being selected.

Given the new coaching staff, any news on how the captains were chosen this year?

No way Stoney was going to be a captain after being suspended from the team. The injury to Williams may have been a factor in his not being selected, else I would agree. Simon and Boren were locks...

Ah, forgot about Stoney's run in with the law. As for Williams, the injury is an on-field only thing IMO. I think its more how a member decides to carry himself off the field Sunday-Friday is most important.

I think team votes are the most fair. Its actually the way we do it in the Air Force when we return from Arctic Survival School Training. Each flight does an MVP for a person they were in the woods with for the week. Not necessarily the most talented at building fires, shelter, or other survival tasks; but the person that great at motivation, selflessness, hard work, etc.

Heard it was a team vote, with some say by Meyer in the end (obviously).

Elevenwarriors.com

John Simon, Zach Boren, Etienne Sabino, Garrett Goebel and Jordan Hall were each selected by their peers to lead the Scarlet and Gray.

"Announcing who are team captains is one of the great honors I get to do as head coach, head coach Urban Meyer said. "We had a number of guys get votes. This is a really good group of seniors who I am very proud to have leading this team."
BTW, This makes Simon a 2 time captain. Only 6 others can claim this, the last being the great James Laurinaitis (07 & 08).

I'd hate to see something like an injury be a deciding factor into a young man like Nathan not getting a captainship.

Well Jordan is injured right now and he still got it. I think the deal with Nate would probably be how long he's been out and the fact that he's probably more focused on getting himself ready to get back onto the field then he would be bringing the younger guys around and you can't really blame him for that. He probably has spent a lot of time off away from the rest of the team rehabbing and what not, so he probably wouldn't have had the same kind of opportunity to establish himself as a leader of this squad.

Seniors John Simon, Zach Boren, Etienne Sabino, Garrett Goebel and Jordan Hall have been chosen as captains of Ohio State?s football team by their teammates.

Coach Urban Meyer announced the selections at a team meeting last night.

Simon, a defensive lineman, becomes only the seventh Buckeye to be a two-time captain. Linebacker James Laurinaitis was the last, in 2007 and ?08.

?This is one of the biggest honors a player can receive, and I?ll be proud to lead this team along with four other great guys,? Simon said in a statement released by the team.

Boren leads all current OSU players with 27 career starts.

?It is a dream come true and a huge honor to be named a captain,? said Boren, a fullback.

Sabino volunteered to redshirt two years ago as a junior. He will lead a group of inexperienced linebackers.

?I am just really honored to be named a captain,? he said.

Goebel is an often-overlooked member of the defensive line.

?I am going to put everything I have into this responsibility,? he said.

Hall is expected to miss the start of the season because of a foot injury he suffered when he stepped on glass outside his apartment, but he earned Meyer?s respect with his growth on the field in the spring and in the classroom.

?I was hoping to be named a captain, but I was also a little surprised when it happened,? Hall said. A year ago, Ohio State did not announce permanent captains until the regular season ended.

Very well said...that was my point exactly. Had he not been injured and away for so long, I think he would've been selected as a captain.
