Ohio Stars In 2011 Under Armour Game
Posted by Bill Kurelic on Jan 05, 2010 at 11:06 am

Four of my top five class of 2011 prospects in the state of Ohio have already committed to play in the 2011 Under Armour All-American game. Braxton Miller, Steve Miller, Doran Grant and Trey DePriest have committed to play in next season's Under Armour game.

2011 UA game roster breakdown - ESPN

Of note:

Quarterbacks

Braxton Miller (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne) is staying in state as well, and has a powerful arm to make all the throws and speed to move the chains on the ground.

Defensive linemen

The group of defensive linemen is led by the top two players in the ESPNU 150: DE Jadeveon Clowney (Rock Hill, S.C./South Pointe) and DT Anthony Johnson (New Orleans, La./O. Perry Walker). Clowney leads a group of dynamic and dangerous pass-rushers on the edge thanks to his size, speed and athleticism, which will make an immediate impact at the next level. Steve Miller (Canton, Ohio/McKinley) is playing in state for the Buckeyes and is a well-balanced run defender who also can get after the quarterback.

Linebackers

Alabama commit Trey DePriest (Springfield, Ohio/Springfield) is the best in the Midwest, and follows in the footsteps of fellow Under Armour alum and Ohio stud linebacker Jordan Hicks.

Ouch...

Anthony Wallace (Dallas, Texas/Skyline) is perhaps the purest inside run-stopper and a strong downhill filler.

Cornerbacks

The 2011 Under Armour cornerback class has its share of speedsters and athletes. Quandre Diggs (Angleton, Texas/Angleton), Nick Waisome (Groveland, Fla./South Lake) and Doran Grant (Akron, Ohio/Saints Vincent and Mary) are the top three in the ESPNU 150 cornerback rankings. Diggs, the younger brother of former Texas Longhorns and current San Diego Chargers cornerback Quentin Jammer, has great ball skills and athleticism. Waisome is one of the natural cover corners in this class and its fiercest competitor. Grant has elite quickness and sticks tightly to receivers out of their breaks. Overall, he's a talented athlete with good ball and leaping skills (41-inch vertical) that have earned him close to 30 offers.

Safeties

Jabari Gorman (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Edward Pace) is scheme versatile, rangy and very instinctive patrolling his deep zone.

First impressions of UA Game - ESPN

Here is a look at five early story lines to pay attention to during the Under Armour All-America Game:

Battles aplenty up front

This is a strong class in the trenches, maybe one of the strongest we have had in the Under Armour game so far. This is the area of the game we pay closest attention to over the week. The offensive linemen have always been the biggest and strongest and have rarely been challenged during their high school careers. On the flipside, elite pass rushers across the defensive front have generally found it to be relatively smooth sailing. Those days come to an abrupt end Jan. 1 for those on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

Long snappers only

This will be the first time we have selected true specialists that will not play another position. Both Zach Ewan (Phoenix, Ariz./North Canyon) for the Red team and Peter McBride (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chapparal) for the White team will handle these duties exclusively.

Tale of two teams - ESPN

White Team Quarterbacks
The recent suspension and possible defection of Terrelle Pryor to the pros will give Ohio State fans even more reason to check out Buckeyes commit Braxton Miller (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne). He is a solid passer and will continue to improve with time and further development. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder can also take over games with his feet and playmaking ability. Kendal Thompson (Moore, Okla./Southmoore) is a real smooth passer who can get it done in the short passing game or throwing the ball down the field. USC commit Max Wittek is an accurate passer that is at his best executing the play-action fake and taking time to scan the field before delivering accurate strikes -- a prototypical quarterback for the West Coast offense.

Red Team Wide Receivers
There is some serious speed at the wide receiver position on the Red team with four guys that can turn a short pass into a long touchdown. There is no player in high school football faster than Tacoi Sumler (Miami, Fla./Columbus), an Oregon commit with a 4.24 40-yard dash in his arsenal. Devon Blackmon (Fontana, Calif./Summit), Eli Rogers (Miami, Fla./Northwestern) and Bradley Sylve (Port Sulpher, La./South Plaquemines) are all among the best playmakers in this class. Marvin Shinn (Prichard, Ala./Vigor) and Ja'Juan Story (Brooksville, Fla./Nature Coast Tech) are big, physical targets that would love to get one-on-one coverage on the outside. Michael Thomas (Woodland Hills, Calif./Taft) will be a reliable target in the red zone and on third down.

White Team Defensive Linemen
The White defensive line brings the beef with 300-pounders Anthony Johnson (New Orleans, La./Perry Walker) and Antwaun Woods (Woodland Hills, Calif./Taft) holding down the interior. Jordan Phillips (Towanda, Kan./Circle) is athletic enough to play tackle or be an imposing figure on the end at 6-5, 285 pounds. Four-star prospect Kevin McReynolds (Washington, D.C./St. John's Prep) is a physical presence in the heart of the trenches that rounds out the interior group. Oklahoma commit Nathan Hughes (Klein, Tex./Klein Oak) does a good job taking on blockers and leads a strong group of defensive ends. The 6-6, 265-pounder will be paired often with Xzavier Dickson (Griffin, Ga./Griffin), who has enough power to knock blockers back and is very good at moving laterally. Steve Miller (Canton, Ohio/McKinley) is the smallest of the White team's defensive linemen but is an excellent defender against the run.

Red Team Linebackers
The Red team will have a five-man rotation at linebacker with Alabama commit Trey DePriest (Akron, Ohio/Springfield) as the leader of the unit. A natural playmaker, DePriest can get to the quarterback by blitzing up the middle or playing as an edge rusher. Lawrence Thomas (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) is a big presence and a big hitter in the center of the defense at 6-3, 230 pounds. Ryan Shazier (Plantation, Fla./Plantation) is a speed demon and a natural edge rusher. Vinnie Sunseri (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Northridge), another Alabama commit, is a coach's son and plays the game with the sort of intangibles you would expect. North Carolina commit Travis Hughes (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) is a solid run defender.

White Team Cornerbacks
The White squad will have a five-man rotation of cornerbacks led by Doran Grant (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary's), a playmaker and a solid tackling cornerback that should only get better with added bulk. De'Ante Saunders (Deland, Fla./Deland) is a terrific athlete and is talented enough to play cornerback or safety if necessary. Demetrious Nicholson (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) might not have the size to blow you away but he's got everything else and Danzel Williams (Arlington, Texas/Martin) is an ideal nickel cornerback. Utah commit Ryan Henderson (Moreno Valley, Calif./Rancho Verde) was the winner of the SPARQ National combine.

White Team Safeties
It's a Sunshine State connection in the defensive backfield for the White team. The nation's top-ranked safety, Karlos Williams (Davenport, Fla./Ridge Community), was the defensive MVP of the Gridiron Kings over the summer. At 6-2, 220 pounds, Williams is the ultimate mix of size, speed, range and physical play. He will be joined by fellow Florida State commit Keelin Smith (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Treasure Coast), one of the more versatile players in the secondary with the sort of skills that translate at any one of the four positions. Jabari Gorman (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Pace) is a hitting machine plain and simple, while Marcus Roberson (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) is a very reactive athlete and a great ball hawk.

Under Armour practice Day 2 blog - ESPN

Highlights:

UA Hands Competition
1. Quan Bray 0:31:25
2. Doran Grant 0:31:50
3. Eli Rogers 0:32:06
4. Robinson Therezie 0:33:59

3:43 pm ET -- Jabari Gorman just read a play, closed hard on a route and created a lot of contact with Malcolm Mitchell. Mitchell appears to have suffered an ankle injury on the play.

(INCLUDES VIDEO) Story makes the play Florida commit Ja'Juan Story beats Josh Turner, a Texas commit, on a deep pass.

2:54 pm ET -- Ja'Juan Story, a Florida pledge, just made a great grab in between coverage down the seem. He used his height and huge catching radius to come up with the ball.

2:44 pm ET -- A couple of notes on Giorgio Newberry's day. The Seminoles commit handled Ohio State commit Steve Miller. He then beat Miller with great leverage. Newberry then shifted to defensive end and used an impressive spin move to get past Bobby Hart, a future teammate in Tallahassee.

2:39 pm ET -- Good matchup to watch this week during practice is Jarvis Landry and Doran Grant. A classic duel between two of the quicker skill prospects. Grant, who will be playing Saturdays in Columbus, Ohio, is looking really good so far. Very hard to shake as receivers have struggled to gain separation.

Yes that's a typo...Grant has not announced a decision yet...

2:17 pm ET -- Future Gator Ja'Juan Story looks so natural at receiver you wouldn't think he played quarterback for his high school team this season.

2:10 p.m. ET -- Buckeye-to-be Braxton Miller is difficult to contain as a dual-threat QB. He has great outside quickness and makes decisive reads.

2:02 p.m. ET -- Ohio State QB Braxton Miller is really bringing it today on the quick slants. He has hit four in a row with perfect velocity and accuracy.

Scout $ - Laura and Bank From UA Practice

Laura McKeeman and Bill Greene are LIVE are the Under Armour practices this week. Here is a video report from Monday's action featuring commits Steve Miller, Braxton Miller and Ryan Shazier, as well as recruits Darius Jennings and Doran Grant.

Free Rivals - Under Armour: Monday's best

Clowney, Chickillo, etc.

White team DBs dominant on Day 3 - ESPN

White team DBs could be UA's best group yet
Obviously Florida State safety commit Karlos Williams (Davenport, Fla./Ridge Community) is on a different level and has shown us how versatile he is this week, but Jabari Gorman (Miramar, Fla./Pace) has also shown the ability to run with receivers and shut them down with deceptive strength and physicality. Overall, it's a really feisty group, but also very fast and athletic. Keelin Smith (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Treasure Coast) has also answered questions about his coverage ability. We feel he's definitely going to be a safety at FSU, potentially a nickel. We don't quite see the fluid hips to play on an island, but he is quick to get downhill as he showed in punt coverage and should be a standout on special teams.

On the perimeter, future Buckeye Doran Grant (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) has been one of the most difficult cornerbacks to create separation on. He can stick with receivers tightly out of their breaks with his great burst and quickness, but on Day 3 showed he can jam and re-route, adding a different element to his game and answering questions.

Ohio State-bound Steve Miller (Canton, Ohio/McKinley) got stalemated a few times by improving Florida State-bound tackle Bobby Hart (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla../St. Thomas Aquinas), but is still a tough player to handle coming off the edge.

Free Scout - Click-Clack Day 3 Notebook

Based on what we've seen thus far out of the quarterbacks, team Click-Clack (red) has a considerable advantage over team Micro G (white) at this crucial position.

Any one of Brett Hundley (6-2/200) of Chandler, Ariz., Kiehl Frazier (6-3/215) of Greenland, Ark., and Jeff Driskel (6-4/225) of Oviedo, Fla. has looked better through the week than his counterpart including Braxton Miller (6-2/190) of Huber Heights, Ohio, Kendal Thompson (6-2/175) of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Max Wittek (6-3/200) of Newport Beach, Calif.

There is a lack of starpower at the wide receiver position, but Eli Rogers (5-10/180) of Miami, Fla. stepped up to have a solid day of practice. He is crisp in his route running, has strong hands, and uses his body well to shield defenders.

The more highly touted Ja'Juan Story (6-3/195) of Brooksville, Fla., and Devon Blackmon (6-0/180) of Fontana, Calif. were relatively quiet letting Rogers steal some of the spotlight today.

The linebacker position for Click-Clack is loaded with talent. Ryan Shazier (6-2/205) of Pompano Beach, Fla. showed terrific speed in pursuit. Trey DePriest (6-1/225) of Springfield, Ohio showed that he has the size and strength for inside but the speed to play outside for Click-Clack.

5 to Work on:

WRs - Ju'Juan Story / Devon Blackmon
Both receivers seemed to coast today after strong showings earlier in the week.

DE - Jadeveon Clowney
There's nowhere to go but down when a player is sitting at the No. 1 spot, and while Clowney's grasp on that position is still firm with his long term potential, he showed today that he needs to learn the nuances of defensive line play. He struggled disengaging from his blocker and looked like he was used to running through or over everyone.

That sentence was very poorly written. I really have no clue what they were trying to say.
It's a shame that they are taking over the recruiting coverage with such terrible journalists. I believe that sentence was trying to say these top-3 QBs were better than the next group (miller, etc).
