Ohio State Buckeyes might need a creative approach to passing game this year
Published: Wednesday, April 13, 2011
By Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer The Plain Dealer

Columbus -- When new Ohio State assistant coach Stan Drayton was at Florida, the Gators' often used their short passing game as their running game. So when Drayton, the Buckeyes' first-year receivers coach who has spent most of his career as a running backs coach, was overseeing a drill at practice Tuesday that saw explosive players like receiver Corey Brown and running back Jordan Hall lining up wide in the backfield, then catching quick screens and getting upfield, there was reason to watch.

Ohio State should be able to run this season, with options like Dan Herron, Jaamal Berry, Rod Smith, Hall and Carlos Hyde. But the Buckeyes have major questions to answer when it comes to figuring out who they're going to throw to.

For the Buckeyes, at least early in the year, it may be that their short passing game is their passing game.

Tressel, Buckeyes busy with task at hand
April, 13, 2011
By Adam Rittenberg

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- There will be a time when Jim Tressel has to give up the thing all coaches covet -- control.

It might not be until Sept. 3, when Tressel begins serving a five-game suspension for violating NCAA rules and doesn't join his Ohio State team at Ohio Stadium for the opener against Akron. It might happen sooner, if the NCAA decides to impose stronger penalties against the coach that would prohibit him from his regular duties.

But Tressel isn't ready to enter that realm yet. If he's concerned about his uncertain future, one he can't control, he's not showing it.

"I really haven't given it much thought," Tressel told ESPN.com after a recent spring practice. "I've always tried not to think too much about things I don't have any control over, and obviously that's one of them. It's been a little different, but in our world, you're so busy.

"You don't have much time to think about what's different."

I think a lot of my Buckeye Brethern are ignoring how difficult it is going to be to play 5 games with one offensive team, then change out/in the QB, RB, LT, and WR - and then try it all out in Lincoln. Ugh. There will also be the findings of an NCAA investigation hanging over the program. The players and coaches will say "We don't worry about that" but they will be worrying about it every day.

Typically, a team is finally figuring out who they are 4-5 games in. Just as the Bucks get some comfort with who they are and what they can do, they will be changing it up and starting over. I don't care what anyone says, those 4 tat offensive players will feel pressure to produce and "atone" - and that might not be good.

A BCS college football schedule/season is difficult to play out successfully even without distractions, disruptions, and controversy. Ohio State has extra stuff to deal with in spades.

Considering that fan optimism or pessimism will not win or lose one game this fall, and given the realities, a little pessimism would not seem to be out of line.

Why be pessimistic? If fans optimism/pessimism has no effect on the team, then why not be positive?

The guys that are out have a 4 year rapport together. The first 5 games are going to be tough...we will have to eek out a couple wins with a strong run game, which suits us.

Let Bauserman hand it off to Berry, Hall and Rod Smith. The line is hardwired to run the ball with Norwell, a great run blocker, in at tackle. Same with Hall, Linsley, Shugarts, Brewster and Mewhort across the line...that is more than sufficient for opening up holes.

Also, the return game showed signs of life last year and has looked good this year with Berry and Hall looking fantastic so far. Buchannon looks much improved and Basil has looked solid. If we get the kick coverage down, we should be very solid in the special teams category, which is being overlooked by most. The defense is hungry and skilled, we just need to stay healthy.

Now once those guys are back, they have the experience together. I don't think the transition will be dramatic, but it is unfortunate they have to go into Lincoln their first game back. I honestly think we will be fine...we will be tested, but we will be fine. :osu:

The personnel on this team feels really similar to that 02 bunch...and that's before the arrival of a superstar QB and NFL LT the 02 group didn't have.

Spring Game: Players to Watch on Offense
TheBuckeyeBattleCry.com

The Buckeyes need to fill some pretty big holes on offense this year thanks to graduations and compounded by suspensions. Luckily, Ohio State always has ultra talented players waiting in the wings to show what they've got.

As a fan, you can only hope that one or more of these players can make a name for themselves and become the next great Buckeye at whatever position they happen to play. The spring game is a great chance to see what some of the young players can do.

Here are the players to watch on offense in the spring game on Saturday.

Good point. I guess the answer to your question is that if you deny reality, it eventually has a way of hitting you square in the face. :)

Looks like you deny the reality that Ohio State is still better than 95% of the college football teams out there, even without the Tat5...
