2011 tOSU Football Discussion

Good thing we're deep at tailback. Rod and Carlos have a golden opportunity to light it up against Akron. Get it done, guys!

Don't be too sure. Rod and Carlos still have to get through tomorrow without getting suspended... seems like a pretty daunting task right now, doesn't it?

Maybe Ebner should give RB a try. He looks up for the challenge.

2011 college football preview: Breaking down the Ohio State Buckeyes, position by position

OFFENSE

Offensive line

Plugging in capable backups Jack Mewhort and Marcus Hall at guards for departed seniors Justin Boren and Bryant Browning isn't much of a step back, if any. Both could be three-year starters and are ready for this. Take senior tackles Mike Adams and J.B. Shugarts and senior center Mike Brewster, with a combined 76 career starts, and the No. 1 line should be a strength, even with talented sophomore Andrew Norwell subbing for the suspended Adams for five games. But the depth is so shallow, the Buckeyes could be two injuries, or maybe one injury, away from potential problems while Adams is out. TREND: UP, but Buckeyes must keep their fingers crossed

Running backs

Jordan Hall, Carlos Hyde, Jaamal Berry and Rod Smith offer options while No. 1 back Dan Herron is suspended, but the Buckeyes have to make the parts equal the whole they'd get with a Beanie Wells or Antonio Pittman. The leading rusher could end up with the fewest yards since Lydell Ross led the way with 475 in 2004. But compared to OSU going with Herron's one-man show after Brandon Saine faded as a ball-carrier last season, the depth is impressive. TREND: UP

Used to the CBS guys (Doyel and Dodd) ripping OSU at every chance, but Doyel says some nice things about the game against Akron and the team as a whole.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- It was Akron, so who really can say, but what the heck -- I'll go ahead and say it:

Ohio State has two solid quarterbacks in Joe Bauserman and Braxton Miller. Ohio State has a promising coach in Luke Fickell. And Ohio State has a team that won't be as bad as some people (OK, me) would have thought, given the terminations, suspensions and distractions of recent months.

Add up those three sentences -- don't forget to carry the one! -- and the Buckeyes beat Akron 42-0 on Saturday in the first game since Jim Tressel was fired and his rule-breaking quarterback, Terrelle Pryor, was kicked out of the program.

The final score is mostly irrelevant, because Ohio State is a historically great program and Akron is a historically bad one. The Zips were 1-11 last season, and they're projected to finish last (again) in the MAC. This was a name-your-score kind of game for Ohio State, a game that requires some perspective. So I'll give it to you:

Fickell used his timeouts to try to get the ball one last time. It wasn't a percentage play, so it wasn't the kind of thing Tressel would have done, but Fickell was showing killer instinct that Tressel showed only once in 10 years at Ohio State -- when he tried to hide the cheating of his best players.
