2011 SEC Football Discussion

Arkansas receiver and punt returner Joe Adams had two TDs on punt returns for the Razorbacks yesterday (see video above for one of them). He finished with 174 yards on 6 punts.

He joins a group of just 7 SEC players who have returned two punts for TDs in the same game, the last person to do it was Kentucky's Derek Abney vs. Mississippi State in 2002.

LSU looked pretty good.

They looked scary good on defense and very good on special teams.

LSU get credit for causing some of Oregon's offensive mistakes, but Oregon was fairly inept and had a hard time getting out of their own way on offense, and the Oregon defense is nothing to get too excited about.

Offensively, LSU looked almost competent.

Dr Saturday Breaks It Down

Consider that the Tiger offense gained 272 yards Saturday on 3.9 yards per play. If it averages those numbers over an entire season, it will finish at or near dead last nationally in both categories. Quarterback Jarrett Lee completed fewer than half of his passes, for a paltry 98 yards and a pass efficiency rating of 97.9. The Tigers only connected on one play covering more than 20 yards, and none covering more than thirty.

Those are ugly offensive numbers. They're about as ugly as they get.

At some point this season, they are going to run into a good defense and be able to score offensively.

LSU didn't prove that they are going to be able to do that yesterday.

Not too many teams have beaten an opponent who's worth a shit. LSU did, and they ape-raped them. Perhaps it will turn out that Oregon is a joke this year and LSU's win was just the first of many Oregon L's.
As it stands now a decent argument can be made LSU is the best team in the country, despite not having the same gaudy numbers teams rolled up against MAC and Sunbelt foes.

did LSU look that good, or did Oregon look AWFUL?

98 passing yards? 175 rushing?

Defensively, yes, LSU looked that good. Very quick to the ball all night. No sacks, but a lot of pressure w/ it's front four.

Offensively, still a lot of question marks. I don't think the 98 passing/175 rushing yds tell the whole story, but still a long ways away from being an offensive juggernaut any way you look at it. Although I will say that I was suprised when I saw the final stats, I thought that LSU had moved the ball a little better than that.

Oregon definitely didn't play it's best game, but I would say at least some of that has to be attributed to the LSU defense.

Summary of expenses from Saturday:

$60-70 bucks in drinks
$25 dollar round trip cab ride
$50 cab cleaning fee (since I puked in the car)
$225 Verizon charge phone charge (since I was a bit too aggressive with my phone and threw it on the floor at home).
150 vbucks lost betting on the dawgs :( :( :(

Long, miserable weekend.

It's hard to say, because like usual, LSU's DL was dominant while Oregon's OL proved why Kelly needed so much trickery to get a first down on 3rd & short. I'd say it was LSU's doing, but Oregon made it a lot worse with their talent & mistakes.
