2011 Offensive Line Discussion

Do we need 4 or 5?

After some consideration - Bucks should take all the top talent that they can get ; but even 3 top caliber linemen in 2012 will suffice.

Tony Gerdeman looks at the OL for each team in the conference.

Ozone

1. Ohio State

Starters: Mike Adams (LT), J.B. Shugarts (RT), Mike Brewster (C)

Possible Starters/Backups: Andrew Norwell, Marcus Hall, Corey Linsley, Jack Mewhort, Tommy Brown (Fr.), Brian Bobek (Fr.), Antonio Underwood (Fr.), Chris Carter (Fr.)

The Buckeyes will be without First Team All-Big Ten left tackle Mike Adams for the first five games of the season, and will likely plug sophomore Andrew Norwell into that vacancy. He was the sixth lineman for Ohio State last season and impressed coaches as a true freshman. Michael Brewster is one of the best two or three centers in the conference, but he'll have different faces on his immediate right and left this year. Marcus Hall will get one of those two spots, assuming he hasn't gone ahead and won the left tackle job. The other guard will likely be the versatile Jack Mewhort. J.B. Shugarts will be at his customary right tackle spot, where he has started for the past two seasons. Obviously, this offensive line will be a lot better in November than they'll be in September?but they should still be pretty darn good in September.

Suspect that the starters will be Norwell, Hall, Brewster, Mewhort and Shugarts. With Adams replacing Norwell after the first five games. Norwell would then serve as backup to LT and RT. Unless, he proves the better man than Mewhort, I think Linsley will likely back-up all three of the Guard and Center spots.

With the small numbers, it would not be surprising if there were no red-shirts from the Freshmen group. Bobek received a lot of good reviews, but there were early comments that Underwood could be the best Center candidate; and both Carter and Brown are big athletes. With a lot of Defensive Ends, not so sure that Baldwin or Farris will not end up taking reps this spring at Tackle.

Finding Left Tackle Critical for Buckeyes
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? With the impending suspension of quarterback Terrelle Pryor to start the 2011 season, all the talk this spring has been about the battle to replace Ohio State?s three-year starter.

But what about his bodyguard?

If Pryor is the most important player missing from the Buckeyes? lineup for the first five games, then Mike Adams might be right behind him.

?The left tackle position, that's really the main one,? starting right tackle J.B. Shugarts said Saturday.

?We've got to find somebody to fill that spot.?

Ohio State football notebook: Offensive linemen trying to fill many holes
Saturday, April 16, 2011
By Ken Gordon
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

One of the most valued characteristics of an offensive line - continuity - has been hard to find at Ohio State this spring.

The Buckeyes graduated four of their top 10 linemen from 2010: starting guards Justin Boren and Bryant Browning, and second-teamers Andrew Miller and Connor Smith.

Sam Longo then transferred to Cincinnati, and only one of four 2011 recruits (Tommy Brown) enrolled early for spring practice.

That left just 11 linemen in school for spring - eight on scholarship, plus three walk-ons. The lack of linemen is a major reason why next weekend's spring game is almost certainly going to feature an offense vs. defense format rather than the usual split-squad affair.

In addition, of course, OSU will be without the services of left tackle Mike Adams for the first five games this fall because of an NCAA suspension. That has led to even more mixing, matching and auditioning.

Marcus Hall and Andrew Norwell are the top competitors to replace Adams. Both of those players also are competing for jobs at guard, along with Jack Mewhort and Corey Linsley.

Also, center Mike Brewster has spent some time with the second team this spring, probably in order to get some work in with the Buckeyes' three young quarterbacks, who need to have some experience taking snaps from Brewster if they win the starting job.

"When the time comes, I'm sure (the coaches) will get things a little more settled down," Brewster said. "But right now, we're trying to get guys to play as many spots as they can just bouncing around, trying to do as many things as they can do.

"It's not like any spring I've been here for."

Starting right tackle J.B. Shugarts sees one benefit to the shortage:

"We're getting in great shape, taking all these extra reps," he said.

Last Line of Offense
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio — And then there were 10.

Okay, technically 11, but the Buckeyes began spring practice with only 10 offensive linemen on the roster after losing eight during the off-season, including starters Justin Boren and Bryant Browning.

The transfer of reshirt freshman Sam Longo , an Ohio State legacy out of Bellbrook, left the Buckeyes woefully thin on the offensive side of the line heading into spring practice

"We've got some new ones coming in for August, but only 10 this spring gives us some challenges," OSU Head Coach Tressel said earlier this spring.

The lack of numbers on the offensive line might actually force the Buckeyes to change their format for the Scarlet and Gray spring game, but while the quantity is low, the quality of this year's line could be one of the best of the Tressel era.

We take a closer look at the (now) 11 guys who make up the last line of offense for Ohio State this spring.

I was told last night that the starting line will look something like this:
LT: Norwell (Until Adams gets back)
LG: Mewhort
C: Brewster
RG: Marcus Hall
RT: JB Shugarts.

Best O-line we've seen in a long time. Only thing is, if injuries hit us, it could be a long year.

Yep but I think we'll be ok when Adams gets back. You will have Linsley, who can play guard or center, plus Norwell, who can play tackle or guard. I tend to think at least one of the freshmen will be ready to roll out of Bobek, Brown, Carter and Underwood (my bets on Brown and Bobek). I am comfortable with that unless the injury bug really hits us, which would be 3 or more starters out.

Pretty sure that says units, not lines...
My bad. Further down the page are the offensive line averages. The Packers line averages 313lbs.

LT: Norwell 308 (Adams 320)
LG: Mewhort 303
C: Brewster 305
RG: Marcus Hall 315
RT: JB Shugarts. 300
avg. 306 this looks like a very athletic line. Maybe one of the recent best? And Adams is slimmed down, also. (320)
