2011 NFL Draft (Mocks, Eval, etc)

NFL Draft 2011: Cleveland Browns will take Alabama tackle Marcell Dareus, says ESPN's Todd McShay

By Tony Grossi, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND -- Some of the NFL Draft analysts are coming to the conclusion the Browns will focus on defense with their first pick in the April 28 draft.
ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay's latest mock draft has them taking Alabama defensive tackle Marcell Dareus with the No. 6 overall pick.
Dareus, 6-2 3/4 and 309 pounds, was suspended the first two games in 2010 for accepting inappropriate benefits from an agent.
"(He) has a little durability concern, and he had the two-game suspension," McShay said on a conference call. "But when this guy's going and he's 100 percent, he's as disruptive as any player in this draft.
"He's strong, a lot stronger than people think . . . has great awareness. He's not as big or athletic as (projected No. 1 tackle Nick) Fairley (of Auburn), but he might be a more complete player when he's 100 percent. He can play the 3-4 or a 4-3 for teams going back and forth ... like Cleveland, that want to do different things up front.

Mel Kiper Mock Draft

Cleveland Browns

Record: 5-11

cle.gif

* J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin
The Browns need to upgrade along the defensive line, and outside of the top two guys in this mock draft, you won?t find a more consistently disruptive and versatile player along the defensive line than Watt, who can come in and provide immediate help as either a 3-4 or 4-3 defensive end as the Browns adjust. He?s a guy who can thrive regardless of the system. If Green still was sitting here, he would be a tantalizing option, but this might be a slight reach for Julio Jones.

NFL Scouting Combine storylines

The next phase of scouting for the 2011 NFL Draft begins in earnest this week as franchises send scouting departments, coaching staffs and medical personnel to Indianapolis to inspect the 325 prospects on hand for the combine.
It will be a full week of medical exams, psychological testing and workouts at Lucas Oil Stadium by players hoping to impress future employers. Before the event starts with players arriving Thursday, here are a half-dozen intriguing storylines to keep an eye on:
Who will grade out as the top athletes?
Top athletic workouts at the combine do not automatically improve a player's draft positioning, yet it does help. This is especially true when a lower-rated prospect turns heads with fast times or better than expected results. Three players expected to excel:
? Patrick Peterson/CB/LSU: Peterson could solidify himself as the draft's No. 2 pick at the combine. All signs point to the LSU junior being one of the fastest, if not the fastest, player in Indy. In recent workouts Peterson has been in the 4.3 range in the 40.
? Markus White/DE-OLB/Florida State: Scouts graded the Florida State pass rusher as a free agent before the year, and the senior received a last-minute invite to the combine. He tipped the scales at 265 pounds recently, posting 40 times in the low 4.6s and completing in excess of 25 reps on the bench.

Draft 2011: Combine Preview

Tuesday, February 22, 2011

NFL Network's coverage of the 2011 Scouting Combine begins Thursday and lasts through Tuesday, March 1. Over 300 players, and many more NFL team representatives, will convene at Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium for the premier event of the pre-draft process.

We've got you covered with this comprehensive preview of the six-day affair, and will update all notable Combine developments beginning with the weigh-in on the Rotoworld news page.

Spotlight on the Stars

LSU CB Patrick Peterson

The Thorpe Award winner as college football's top defensive back, Peterson is aiming for a 4.2 forty time while draft analysts debate whether his best NFL position is corner or safety. Peterson was timed at 4.37 last spring, also putting on record a 39-inch vertical and 11-foot-1 broad jump.

Georgia WR A.J. Green

I sent Green to Cleveland with the sixth pick in my latest mock draft, but he's emerging as a sleeper to go No. 1 overall with momentum building for a Steve Smith trade. In addition to his forty time and vertical, keep an eye on Green's hand size and arm length at the weigh-in.

A.J. Green is sharp (and likes Cleveland), but Julio Jones dazzles at NFL combine workouts

INDIANAPOLIS -- Mohamed Massaquoi thinks his good friend and former Georgia teammate A.J. Green is the top receiver in the draft, despite a sizzling combine workout on Sunday by Alabama's Julio Jones.
"I'm not up on all the combine numbers yet, but I think A.J. is the best receiver in this draft," said Massaquoi. "He's got phenomenal hands, he runs well and he's physical. He's got a tremendous body of work at Georgia. If you put all of that up against anybody, I think A.J. would come out on top."
Green, one of the players the Browns are considering with the sixth pick of the first round, got some competition Sunday from Jones, who produced the combine's workout of the day.
Widely regarded as the second-best wideout, Jones (6-4, 220) recorded a 4.39 in the 40, 11'3" in the broad jump and 38.5 inches in the vertical jump. His broad jump was two inches away from the combine record.
For comparison's sake, Green (6-4, 211) ran 4.48 in the 40, an above-average 10 feet, 6 inches in the broad jump and had a 34.5-inch vertical jump. Teams were hoping to see Green get his 40 time below 4.5 seconds, and his broad jump exceeded last year's average at the combine by more than six inches.
"I feel I had a pretty good day," Green told NFL Network after the workout. "I'm happy with my performance. I feel like I did my best."
During his media interview on Friday, Green credited Massaquoi, his friend and mentor, with helping him get to this point. The two spent one year together at Georgia, when Green was a freshman in 2008.

Abilene Christian's Edmond Gates tied Fort Valley's Ricardo Lockette with a 4.37 forty, fastest among wide receivers in Sunday's NFL Combine.

Gates has bragging rights in his family after beating cousin and fellow Abilene Christan star Bernard Scott's 4.43 mark from 2009. The former basketball player caught 66 passes for 1,182 yards and 13 TDs last year. An exceptional athlete but unrefined as a route runner, Gates is a mid-round prospect.

NFL Network's Mike Mayock calls Wisconsin DE J.J. Watt the best "five-technique" end he's ever seen.

"Better than Tyson Jackson who went No. 3 overall [in the 2009 draft]," added Mayock. Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema, who coached Aaron Kampman at Iowa, says he's never had "anybody better" as a defensive lineman. "J.J.'s just got a little more burst and athletic ability," said Bielema. "But same type of temperament."

Maryland RB Da'Rel Scott ran a 4.34 forty at Sunday's NFL Combine, topping all running backs.

Scott continues the recent history of Terps burning up the track at Indy. Merely a late-round prospect, Scott was Maryland's second-leading rusher (708 yards) while notching MVP honors in the Military Bowl after exploding for 200 yards on 13 carries.

Florida State QB Christian Ponder was the "consensus top performer" in Sunday's Combine drills.

It's a good thing Ponder changed his mind about throwing at the Combine. Though Ponder's motion does require effort, he showed the best combination of accuracy and arm strength among Sunday's throwers. Ponder remains an injury risk, but he's now aced both the Senior Bowl and the Combine as a potential second-round pick.

NFL Network's Charley Casserly reports that Alabama WR Julio Jones will require surgery to repair a fracture in his foot.

According to Casserly, Jones should still be 100 percent before the season. It's believed the fracture was discovered in Combine medical checks, and but Jones performed all drills in Indianapolis anyway. While it makes Jones' incredible Combine performance even more impressive, it's certainly possible that the surgery could affect Jones' draft stock. Michael Crabtree fell to No. 10 overall in 2009, at least in part due to a similar pre-draft operation.

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2011/02/top_defensive_linemen_put_on_a.html

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Alabama defensive tackle Marcell Dareus had such a strong showing at the NFL Combine that he might be off the first-round board by the time the Browns pick at No. 6.
But several other defensive linemen had strong outings in Indianapolis. They include Wisconsin end J.J. Watt, who finished in the top four in five of six drills, North Carolina defensive end Robert Quinn and Auburn tackle Nick Fairley.
Quinn, who sat out all last season after accepting improper agent benefits, was unhappy with his 40-time of 4.7, far off the 4.55 he was hoping for, but fared better in other drills.
Widely regarded as the top end, Clemson's Da'Quan Bowers didn't work out because he's been recovering from a small meniscus tear that required postseason surgery.
Dareus helped himself more than Fairley, according to NFL Network's Mike Mayock and ESPN's Todd McShay. McShay had the Browns taking Dareus in his pre-combine mock draft but now thinks he could go in the first or second selection.

You guys played Purdue this year right?

What's the word on their DE, Kerrigan? Is he worth a damn?
Lotta mocks I read have him falling to Atlanta, but I don't think Perdue has played defense since 1978 - hard for me to believe that he could be an impact player :/

He won the 2009 game against OSU. He was unblockable. I want to say he had 3 sacks and a couple forced fumbles. Helluva good college player.

Kerrigan's a beast. I think he'll be a good NFL player.

While Purdue hasn't been a great defensive team in the past, they have had fairly steady stream of quality individual defensive players (never really more than 1-2 at a time) come through there over the years.

this wont make not taking Peterson with the first pick any easier for the browns

LSU CB Patrick Peterson ran a 4.32 forty time, unofficially, on his first attempt at the Scouting Combine Tuesday.
He also posted an explosive 10-foot-, 6-inch broad jump earlier in the day. Peterson weighed in at 6-foot and 219 pounds this week, so a low-4.3 forty time is absurd. He's locked in as a top-seven overall pick in the draft.
